Behavioral Changes in My Elderly Mother with Scleroderma - #48737

Client_d68986
$3.51

My mother is 73 years old and is suffering from scleroderma. She is currently taking Ayurvedic medicines for her condition. For the last 15 days, we have noticed a significant change in her behaviour and thinking. She has started having excessive doubts and suspicion, especially believing that her husband is involved with other women, without any proof. This doubt is repetitive and fixed, and it causes her emotional distress and family tension. She also appears anxious and overthinks a lot.We want to understand whether this could be related to age, illness, medicines, sleep issues, or a psychological imbalance, and what Ayurvedic or supportive treatment is recommended.

How long has your mother been experiencing these behavioral changes?:

- 1-2 weeks

Has there been any recent change in her medication or dosage?:

- Unsure

How would you describe her sleep patterns recently?:

- Occasional disturbances

🩺 Possible Contributing Factors - Age-related changes: Cognitive decline, dementia, or mood disorders can appear in the 70s. - Illness-related stress: Chronic autoimmune conditions like scleroderma can affect mental health. - Medication effects: Some Ayurvedic or allopathic medicines may influence mood, sleep, or cognition. - Sleep disturbance: Poor sleep can worsen anxiety, suspicion, and repetitive thoughts. - Psychological imbalance: This pattern resembles delusional suspicion or anxiety disorder, which needs medical evaluation.

1.Ashwagandha capsules 2 cap twice daily with warm milk after meals 2.Manasmithra vatkam 2 tab twice daily with milk after meals 3.Brahmi vati 1 tab at bedtime with water 4.Saraswatarishta 20 ml with 20 ml water twice daily after meals 5.Jatamansi churna 1/4 tsp twice daily with warm water or milk after meals 6.Ksheer bala 101 oil- 2 drops in ewach nostril once daily in the morning

Lifestyle & Supportive Measures - Encourage regular sleep routine (early bedtime, no stimulants at night). - Gentle yoga and pranayama: Anulom Vilom, Bhramari for calming. - Warm oil massage (Abhyanga) with sesame or Brahmi oil for relaxation. - Provide emotional reassurance — avoid confrontation about her doubts, instead gently redirect her attention.

HELLO,

Your mothers recent behaviour change- unnecessary suspicion, repeated doubts, anxiety, overthinking, and emotional distress- is not a character problem, not stubbornness and not normal old age

This is happening because the balance of the mind has been disturbed

WHY THIS HAPPENS AT HER AGE In Ayurveda, life after 60 years is called vata dominant age

VATA CONTROLS -thinking -nervous system -fear -sleep -imagination

WITH AGING -vata naturally increases -brain tissues become delicate -sleep becomes lighter -emotional tolerance reduces

if vata becomes too high, it causes -excessive thinking -fear without reason -doubts and suspicion -repetitive thoughts -anxiety -disturbed sleep

WHY IT STARTED SUDDENLY This sudden onset over 1-2 weeks suggests a trigger, such as -chronic illness (scleroderma-> Ojas depletion) -certain Ayurvedic medicines that are hot, sharp, or drying -poor sleep -emotional sleep -weak digestion in old age This is reversible if treated early

TREATMENT GOALS -calm the aggravated vata -stabilize the mind -reduce suspicious and repetitive thoughts -improve sleep quality -nourish brain tissues -resotre emotional security -prvent progression

INTERNAL MEDICATIONS

A) MIND STABILIZING MEDICINES

1) BRAHMI GHRITA= 1 tsp in milk at night for 8 weeks =reduces anxiety, calms racing thoughts, improves emotional balance

2) SHANKHAPUSHPI SYRUP= 15ml twice daily after meals =reduces dout and obsession , improves mental clarity, calms nervous system

3) JATAMANSI CAPSULES= 250mg at night = reduces fear and suspicion, improves sleep depth

4) TAGAR CAPSULES= 1 cap at night = helpful If sleep disturbances increases

EXTERNAL THERAPIES

1) HEAD MASSAGE= BRAHMI OIL DAILY -15-20 min =directly pacifies vata in brain and nerves

2) FOOT MASSAGE -warm oil at bedtime -everyday =foot nerves connect to brain-> improves sleep and calmness

DIET -warm cooked meals -ghee smallamount -rice, moong dal -cooked vegetables -milk at night -nutmeg pinch in milk for sleep

AVOID -tea,coffee -spicy, sour, fermented foods -drysnacks -cold foods -late night eating

LIFESTYLE

WHAT FAMILY SHOULD DO -do not argue with her beliefs -do not repeatedly correct her -do not say "this is false "

WHAT HELPS -ackowledge her feelings not thoughts -keep daily routine fixed -calm environment -soft lighting at night -reduce tv/new exposure

YOGA -simple stretching -vajrasana -shavasana

PRANAYAM -anulom vilom -bhramari excellent for anxiety

HOME REMEDIES -warm milk + nutmeg pinch at night -daily oil massage -mild herbal teas -warm bath before sleep

DURATION AND PROGNOSIS -Improvement usually starts in 2-3 weeks -full stabilisation = 6-8 weeks –early treatment= excellent outcome

This condition -is medical ad treatable -is not madness -is not permanent -needs patience and gentle care

Your calm handling is part of treatment

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

Do NOT confront or argue with her beliefs. It increases distress and suspicion. Respond calmly: “We understand you’re worried. You are safe. We are with you.”

ONLY if no known allergy -

1. Brahmi Ghrita Dose: ½ tsp at night With: warm milk Benefit: calms mind, reduces suspicious thinking, improves sleep

2. Saraswatarishta Dose: 10 ml + equal water, once daily after lunch Benefit: anxiety, repetitive thoughts, emotional balance

3. Ashwagandha churna Dose: 250 mg at night With: warm milk Benefit: reduces anxiety, stabilizes mood (Avoid high doses in elderly)

4. Shiro Abhyanga (head oiling) Oil: Brahmi taila or Ksheerabala taila Frequency: 3–4 times/week Time: evening, followed by warm towel wrap Benefit: grounding, reduces mental agitation

5. Sleep hygiene (very important) Fixed sleep time No TV/phone 1 hour before bed Dim lights after sunset Gentle chanting or soft bhajans

Hello I get how tough this must be on your family. When someone’s behavior changes suddenly at this age, especially with new worries, doubts, and anxiety, it’s important to take it seriously and figure out what’s going on. You’re right, it could be lots of things, not just a mind thing.

What Could Be Up (Check These First)

For a 73-year-old, new suspicious thoughts might point to:

1. Early thinking change Sometimes, the first signs of mild memory problems or early dementia are: –Being suspicious –Thinking about the same things over and over –Getting stuck on ideas –Misunderstanding what’s happening

2. Trouble sleeping Not sleeping well can make someone more: –Worried –Likely to overthink –Think others are out to get them

3. Medications Some medicines (both Ayurvedic and regular) might cause: –Feeling stirred up – Too much mental energy –Feeling off-balance –Especially: –Strong tonic –Herbs that pep you up –Formulas that act like steroids

4. Body check up (really common) Get these checked: –B12 levels –Thyroid – Electrolytes –Urine (UTIs in older folks can mess with their heads) –Dehydration

AYURVEDIC UNDERSTANDING

This looks like things are off in the channels that carry mental energy because: * Vata is out of whack → causing fear, suspicion, and restlessness * Pitta is involved → leading to overthinking, getting stuck on things, and being irritable

This isn’t a mental illness yet but it’s a sign to pay attention.

What to Do Right Away (Super Important)

Before giving any meds: Get these done: –CBC –Vitamin B12 –TSH (thyroid) –Electrolytes –Urine test

Fixing these can often clear up mental changes in older people.

Ayurvedic Support (Safe and Gentle)

1. To calm things down These are usually okay for older people: – Brahmi vati (plain) 1 tablet at night after eating – Shankhpushpi syrup 2 tsp at night

These can: –Ease suspicion –Sharpen thinking – Calm overthinking

2. For Sleep If sleep’s a problem: Tagara (Valerian) capsule 1 at bed time Or Jatamansi capsule 1 at night

3. To nourish the nervous system Ashwagandha only if:She doesn’t have high blood pressure She’s not on sedatives Dose: super low (250 mg at night)

What NOT to Do Avoid –Strong tonics –Enemas –Strong detox Right now, strong detox might make things worse.

How the Family Can Help (Really Important) Don’t * Argue about her doubts * Try to prove her wrong with logic

Instead * Let her know you hear her * Gently change the subject * Keep things calm * If you push back, she might get more stuck on her ideas

Main Thing to Remember

Sudden suspicious thinking at 73 isn’t just normal aging. But it can often get better if you catch it early. It’s like a brain hiccup, not a sign of losing it.

Be gentle, get medical help, and offer support –chances are good she’ll bounce back.

Warm Regards Dr. Snehal Vidhate

FROM YOUR DESCRIPTION IT APPEARS THAT SHE IS EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE DOUBT SUSPICION AND ANXIETY WHICH CAN BE DUE TO AGE RELATED VATA AND PITA IMBALANCE NEUROLOGICAL CHANGES OR POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF MEDICATIONS USED FOR SCLERODERMA SLEEP DISTURBANCE CAN ALSO AGGRAVATE THESE SYMPTOMS

IN AYURVEDA THIS CONDITION CAN BE CONSIDERED AS MANO VATA VATA AND PITA DISTURBANCE IN MANAS DHATU AFFECTING BUDDHI AND MANO VIKARA I RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING SUPPORTIVE MEASURES

TAKE BRAHMI CHURNA 1 TEASPOON WITH WARM MILK OR WARM WATER DAILY AT NIGHT TO CALM MIND IMPROVE MEMORY AND REDUCE ANXIETY

SHANKHAPUSHPI CAPSULE 250 MG TWICE DAILY AFTER FOOD TO SUPPORT NERVOUS SYSTEM AND EMOTIONAL STABILITY

ASHWAGANDHA 500 MG TWICE DAILY AFTER FOOD TO REDUCE STRESS ANXIETY AND IMPROVE SLEEP QUALITY

PRACTICE DAILY MEDITATION AND DEEP BREATHING EXERCISES LIKE ANULOM VILOM AND BHRAMARI FOR 10 MINUTES IN THE MORNING AND EVENING

ENSURE ADEQUATE SLEEP WITH LIGHT DINNER AVOID EXCESS STIMULANTS OR EXCITATION BEFORE BED

SUPPORTIVE DIET SHOULD INCLUDE WARM COOKED MEALS GHEE IN MODERATION SOFT VEGETABLES FRUITS AND NUTS AVOID ICED FOODS FRIED FOODS AND EXCESS SALT

GENTLE MASSAGE WITH MEDICATED OILS LIKE BRAHMI OR MAHANARAYAN OIL ON HEAD AND NECK DAILY CAN HELP CALM NERVOUS SYSTEM

IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO MONITOR HER SYMPTOMS CAREFULLY BECAUSE SUDDEN CHANGES IN THINKING AND SUSPICION CAN SOMETIMES BE RELATED TO AGE RELATED COGNITIVE CHANGES OR MEDICATION SIDE EFFECTS IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST OR WORSEN A CONSULTATION WITH A GERIATRICIAN OR PSYCHIATRIST IS ADVISED ALONG WITH CONTINUATION OF AYURVEDIC SUPPORT

Thank you for reaching out and trusting me with your health journey I can understand how concerning this sudden change in your mother’s thoughts and behaviour must be for you and your family In a 73 year old such fixed doubts suspicion and overthinking are usually not normal aging changes They indicate a disturbance in the mind and cognitive function Several factors can contribute to this First age naturally increases vata especially prana and vyana vata When vata is aggravated it can cause fear doubt anxiety restlessness and repetitive thoughts Second chronic illnesses like scleroderma create long term physical stress fatigue and weaken ojas When ojas is low the mind becomes more sensitive insecure and unstable Third some ayurvedic medicines if strong or not age appropriate can aggravate vata and pitta in the nervous system Fourth even occasional sleep disturbances can increase anxiety suspicion and irrational thinking These symptoms suggest vata aggravation with rajo guna dominance and early medical evaluation is very important I would strongly advise you to consult a physician or psychiatrist to rule out electrolyte imbalance vitamin b12 deficiency thyroid issues early cognitive decline or drug induced confusion In terms of ayurvedic supportive care the focus should be on calming vata nourishing ojas and stabilizing the mind Gentle medhya rasayanas like brahmi mandukaparni or shankhpushpi in age appropriate doses Ghrita based preparations if digestion allows Mild anxiolytic herbs like jatamansi or tagara can help Avoid strong detox or very heating medicines Diet should be warm soft easily digestible meals with regular timing Avoid fasting and dryness Daily gentle oil application on head and feet Quiet environment and minimal stimulation Sleep should be supported by regular sleep time avoiding late night screen or discussions Warm milk with suitable herbs if advised Family support is very important Calmly acknowledge her feelings without arguing Engage her in familiar light activities Avoid isolation and reassure her If the doubts increase day by day or she becomes confused aggressive or sleepless seek immediate medical attention Early intervention is very important and this condition is often manageable and reversible
