Hello I get that you’re worried. Constipation is pretty common in little kids. Usually, it’s because their digestion is a bit off and things aren’t moving as they should. The idea in Ayurveda is to help their bodies get back on track naturally, not just force things to happen.

CAN A 3-YEAR-OLD HAVE TRIPHALA?

Yes but just a tiny bit, and not every day for a long time. It’s more to help things along, not something they should rely on.

HOW MUCH IS OKAY FOR A 3-YEAR-OLD?

Triphala powder: 👉 Just a pinch (¼ teaspoon) once a day.

Before bed. Mix it with: Warm water or a bit of honey.

Only use it for: About a week or so (7–10 days). Then stop and see how things go.

WHAT TO TRY FIRST (SUPER IMPORTANT) Before you even think about Triphala, try these:

Warm Water: Give them a glass of warm water first thing in the morning. Ghee (This is awesome for kids!):

A teaspoon of cow ghee in warm milk at night. That alone usually fixes constipation by itself.

WHAT TO EAT (THE REAL FIX)

✅INCLUDE Ripe papaya Cooked apples Soaked raisins (4–5) Oats, veggies, dal

❌AVOID Too many cookies or bread Cheese, bakery treats Cold foods at night

WHEN NOT TO USE TRIPHALA

If your kid has: Diarrhea Not much appetite Is underweight Has tummy pain

KEY AYURVEDA TIP

For kids: Fix their digestion first, don’t just give them laxatives. Triphala every day for months can make their bowels not want to work on their own.

IF THEY’RE ALWAYS CONSTIPATED

Better than Triphala long-term: Draksharishta – 2.5 ml each night Or Abhayarishta – 2.5 ml each night These are way gentler for kids.

Top pick Ghee + warm water

For a bit Triphala ¼ tsp

For keeps Good food + routine

What to skip Laxatives daily

Warm Regards Dr. Snehal Vidhate

🌿 Triphala and Children - Triphala churna is a classical Ayurvedic blend of three fruits (Haritaki, Bibhitaki, Amalaki). It’s traditionally used for digestion and mild constipation in adults. - For toddlers (age 3): Ayurveda generally recommends very gentle remedies. Triphala can be too strong for such a young child, especially in powder form, which may irritate the gut or cause loose motions. - Safety concern: There isn’t enough modern clinical evidence on Triphala’s safety and dosage for children under 5.

✅ Safer Alternatives for Constipation in Children Instead of Triphala, these gentle, child‑friendly measures are often recommended:

Dietary adjustments - Increase fiber: fruits like papaya, pears, prunes, soaked raisins. - Add more vegetables and whole grains. - Ensure adequate hydration (warm water sips through the day).

Lifestyle routines - Encourage regular toilet timing after meals. - Gentle tummy massage clockwise can help stimulate bowel movement. - Physical activity (play, running, stretching) supports digestion.

Ayurvedic gentle options (only under guidance) - A teaspoon of ghee in warm milk can soften stools. - Soaked raisins or figs are mild and safe for children. - Herbal formulations like Bal Ghuti or pediatric‑specific Ayurvedic syrups are sometimes prescribed instead of Triphala.

Warm Regards DR. ANJALI SEHRAWAT

HELLO, Your child is suffering from constipation for the last 1-6 months without any other illness. This is very common in toddlers and preschool children In Ayurveda, bowel movement is controlled by a subtype of Vata Dosha called Apana Vata. When Apana Vata becomes dry , weak, or disturbed , stools become -hard -dry -infrequent -difficult or painful to pass WHY THIS HAPPENS IN CHILDREN -childs digestion is still developing -less water intake -holding stools due to fear, distraction, or routine change -dry or refined food -reduced physical activity -Excess Vata nature of childhood This is a functional constiation, not a disease It is reversible with gentle correction, not strong medicines TREATMENT GOALS -soften stools naturally -normalize Apana Vata movement -create daily bowel habit -avoid dependency on laxatives -support child’s growth and strength WHY STRONG LAXATIVES (like triphala) are avoided daily Triphala has -purgative -scraping -hot-sharp effect In small children -canincrease vata -may cause abdominal pain -can weaken natural bowel reflex -risk of dependency Hence triphala is not first line therapy in 3 year old INTERNAL MEDICATIONS 1) CASTOR OIL- main medicine =best mediicne for Apana Vata, softens stool, lubricates intestines, does not harm digestion when used properly DOSE= 3-5 drop mixed in 1/2 cup warm cow’s milk at bedtime 2-3 times per week (not daily) take this for 2-3 weeks gradually stop once daily bowel movements improves OTHER OPTION -GANDHARVA HARITAKI= 1/4 tab crush make powder and give with warm water at bedtime once weekly =mild bowel correction without harsh effect EXTERNAL TREATMENT 1) OIL MASSAGE= SESAME OIL -gentle circular massage over abdomen -clockwise direction -5 minutes FREQUENCY= daily =pacifies vata, improves gut movement, relieves dryness DIET -warm cow’s milk -ghee 1-2 tsp daily -moong dal -rice, wheat -well cooked vegetabes= bottle gourd, pumpkin , ridge gourd, carrot -papaya small quantity -soaked raisins 3-5 AVOID -biscuits, bakery items -cheese -fried foods -chips , noodles -cold foods, ice cream -excess banana -dry snacks HOME REMEDIES -soaked raisins remedy= soak 3-5 raisin overnight, mash and give in morning -Ghee 1/2 tsp with warm milk at night daily for 2 weeks –Warm water -smal sips throughout the day LIFESTYLE AND HABIT FORMATION BOWEL TRAINING -fix one time daily preferably morning -make child sit on potty for 5 min -no force, no scolding -praise effort, not result PHYSICAL ACTIVITY -free play -running -jumping -outdoor games DURATION OF TREATMENT -Initial correction= 2-3 weeks -habit formation= 4-6 weeks -diet and lifestyle = Lon term Goal is self sustained daily bowel movement without medicine This condition is common and completely manageable Avoid fear of dependency if mediicnes are used correctly and temporarily Focus more on routine, food, oil and love Never rush stools with strong laxatives Ayurveda treats the root cause, not just motion With gentle correction, your child’s bowels will normalize naturally DO FOLLOW HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL THANK YOU DR. Yes, triphala churna can be used for a 3-year-old for constipation, but caution is needed.

How to use: Give 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of triphala churna with warm water or milk at night. Start with a small dose to see how your child responds.

If constipation persists for more than a few weeks, or if there’s pain, vomiting, or blood in stool, consult a pediatrician.
