Doctors' responses

Persistent back headaches and memory issues, especially if MRI scans are normal, can often be linked to an imbalance in the body’s internal energies, accumulated stress, or nerve-related weakness. Ayurveda approaches such issues holistically, aiming to balance the mind and body, alleviate pain, and strengthen mental faculties.

To address the ongoing pain, Shirodhara (a gentle, steady stream of warm herbal oil poured over the forehead) may be beneficial as it helps relieve stress and pacifies aggravated Vata dosha, which can be a root cause of constant headache and mental fatigue. Nasya therapy, in which medicated oils are administered nasally, is also highly effective for chronic headaches, promoting mental clarity and relieving head and neck tension. Additionally, Abhyanga (full body massage with warm medicated oils) helps reduce Vata, improve circulation, and reduce headache frequency.

For daily support, you may consider Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) capsules or powder, known to boost memory, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity. Ashwagandha is another excellent adaptogen to consider, as it reduces fatigue, strengthens the nervous system, and promotes relaxation, which may also help reduce hair loss due to stress. Amalaki Rasayana or Triphala can be taken to promote detoxification and provide nourishment to the scalp, supporting hair growth.

Additionally, avoid foods that aggravate Vata (cold, dry, and raw foods) and emphasize warm, nourishing meals, including whole grains, fresh vegetables, and ghee. Yoga poses like Balasana (Child’s Pose) and Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose) are helpful for improving blood circulation to the head and reducing strain. Practicing meditation and deep breathing exercises (like Anulom Vilom) can also provide relief from constant pain and improve memory

Given what you’re going through with constant back headache, memory loss, and other symptoms, it’s essential to figure out what’s going on. Sometimes the root of problems might not show up on the MRI and that’s frustrating. Talking to a pschyrist and getting treated is a good move and yet from Ayurveda’s perspective, we can look into imbalances that might be contributing to this situation.

First, severe headaches and pain every minute indicate aggravated Vata dosha, which can cause dryness, lightness, and movement - sometimes leading to hair loss, memory issues, and pain. Vata governs the nervous system too, so calming it down often helps. Incorporating warm, grounding, and nourishing practices could help balance Vata.

Diet is crucial. Warm, cooked foods like soups, stews, and teas could be soothing. Think of grounding foods like root vegetables, grains, and healthy oils (such as sesame oil). Avoid raw, cold foods as they may aggravate Vata. Hydration is important, so drink warm water or herbal teas, especially those with ginger or tulsi.

Daily routine matters a lot. Try to establish a consistent schedule with regular sleep and wake times. Wind down before bed - reading or listening to soothing music might help. A gentle head and body massage with warm sesame oil could alleviate pain and calm the mind. You can also try nasal drops, called Nasya, with medicated oil like Anu Taila to support memory and relieve headache.

Ashwagandha and Brahmi are herbs beneficial to combat stress and improve memory issues. A tea with Brahmi leaves or a powder might be good. But remember, herbs should be taken with caution and ideally under guidance from a skilled practitioner.

Since you mentioned psychiatric medication, keep your psychiatrist in the loop about any changes or Ayurvedic interventions. While Ayurveda can complement, never interfere with existing treatments unless guided by your doctor.

Take care of yourself. It may take a bit of time but focusing on soothing Vata might yield some relief. And if things get worse or you feel something’s amiss, consult your healthcare provider promptly.
