What Are the Causes of Night Blindness and How Can Ayurveda Help in Treatment? - #14900

Anonymous

Lately, I’ve been having trouble seeing in low-light conditions. This started slowly, and at first, I thought it was just due to aging, but now it’s becoming more noticeable. When driving at night, I have difficulty seeing street signs, and even when I walk around the house in the evening, I often bump into furniture. The doctor told me I have night blindness, but they didn’t explain much about the cause. I’m worried that this might be related to a vitamin deficiency, especially Vitamin A, but I also read that other conditions like retinal issues can cause night blindness. I’m not sure if I should get more tests or if there’s something I can do to improve my night vision. I’ve been looking into Ayurvedic solutions, and I know Ayurveda focuses on the balance of the body’s systems. Are there herbs or dietary changes in Ayurveda that can help improve vision and treat night blindness naturally? Can increasing my intake of certain foods like carrots or using herbs like Triphala support eye health? Has anyone here successfully treated night blindness with Ayurveda? What worked best for you in terms of diet, herbs, or lifestyle changes?

Doctors’ responses

Night blindness, or nyctalopia, is often linked to Vitamin A deficiency, but it can also be caused by conditions like retinal degeneration or cataracts. While conventional treatments address underlying causes, Ayurveda offers remedies to support eye health and vision improvement through a holistic approach. 1. Ayurvedic Remedies for Night Blindness Triphala: Known for its benefits in promoting eye health, Triphala can be consumed as a tea or taken in powdered form. You can also use it as an eye wash (after consulting a practitioner). Amla (Indian Gooseberry): A powerful antioxidant and rich source of Vitamin C, Amla helps strengthen the optic nerves and supports better vision. Ghrita (Ghee): Ghee medicated with Triphala or other herbs is used in Ayurveda to improve vision and nourish the eyes internally. Bilva (Bael fruit): Supports retinal health and improves the ability to see in low light. 2. Dietary Suggestions Vitamin A-rich Foods: Focus on foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, and pumpkin to boost Vitamin A levels. Leafy Greens: High in lutein and zeaxanthin, which are essential for eye health. Nuts & Seeds: Almonds, sunflower seeds, and flaxseeds provide Vitamin E, which protects the retina from oxidative damage. Healthy Fats: Incorporate ghee or coconut oil to help absorb fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A. 3. Ayurvedic Eye Practices Netra Basti: A traditional Ayurvedic therapy where medicated ghee is applied around the eyes to nourish and strengthen the optic nerves. Eye Exercises: Simple eye rotations, focusing on near and far objects, and palming (rubbing your hands together and placing them over your eyes) can relax and strengthen the eyes. 4. Lifestyle Changes Reduce Screen Time: Excessive blue light exposure can worsen night vision. Use blue light filters if necessary. Proper Hydration: Drink enough water to maintain moisture and reduce dryness in the eyes. Protect from Bright Light: Wear sunglasses during the day to avoid excessive strain on your eyes. 5. Personal Experiences Many people have found improved night vision by incorporating Triphala, Amla, and a Vitamin A-rich diet into their daily routines. However, if night blindness persists or worsens, it’s important to follow up with an eye specialist to rule out serious retinal conditions. Consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner can also help create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
