Hi Sunita,

Can you please elaborate, since when has he been having the cough. Have you noticed any triggering factor for dry/wet cough. Have you noticed the color of the phlegm?

Hello Sunita, What is the colour of sputum? Fever or other symptoms? Does your father experience breathlessness, chest pain, or blood in sputum along with the cough? Is his appetite and digestion stable during chemotherapy?

For relief from frequent coughing, give Sitopaladi Churna (1/4 tsp) with 1/4 tsp honey , honey twice daily to soothe the respiratory tract if he is non diabetic. If he is diabetic then Yashtimadhu Churna + trikatu churna both 1/4 tsp each, with warm water can help reduce phlegm. Prepare a decoction of Vasaka (Adhatoda), Guduchi (Giloy) Mulethi (Licorice), and Tulsi and give it 2-3 times daily for lung support. Gentle steam inhalation with Eucalyptus oil may help ease congestion. Ensure a light, warm diet with easily digestible foods to maintain strength. Let me know if further guidance is needed.

Namaste Sunita Ji,

Lung cancer at Stage IV requires a holistic approach to improve his quality of life, reduce discomfort, and strengthen his immunity alongside chemotherapy. Since his main issue is frequent dry and wet cough, Ayurveda focuses on balancing Kapha-Vata dosha to relieve congestion and improve lung function.

•	Sitopaladi Churna (1/4 tsp with honey, 2-3 times daily) – Helps in dry and wet cough, clears mucus.
•	Yashtimadhu (Licorice) Tea – Soothes the throat and reduces cough irritation. Boil 1 tsp Licorice in 1 cup water, drink warm 2 times daily.
•	Tulsi, Ginger & Pippali Tea – Helps break down mucus and ease breathing.
•	Chyawanprash (½ tsp daily) – Strengthens lung function & immunity.

•	Steam inhalation with Tulsi or Eucalyptus oil (twice daily) helps clear congestion
•	Give him warm, light, and easy-to-digest food (Khichdi, Moong Dal soup, vegetable broth).
•	Avoid cold foods, dairy, processed, and oily foods, as they increase mucus.

4. Acupressure & Color Therapy • Gently massage the lung meridian point (above the wrist on the thumb side) to ease breathing. Daily once • Keep a positive environment around him. • Encourage rest and minimal stress to support recovery.

Please let me know if he has any past history like Dm/hypetension/or other backgrounds

Best Regards, Dr. M. Sushma (Ayurvedic Consultant)

Handling frequent dry and wet coughs after chemotherapy for lung cancer can be quite distressing, but integrating Ayurvedic wisdom can help in supporting the body through such challenges. It’s essential to work closely with your father’s oncologist while considering Ayurvedic remedies, to ensure alignment with his current medical treatments.

Now about the cough – it’s often linked with imbalances in the Kapha dosha, especially when there’s wetness, and Vata dosha for dryness. Local remedies could involve sipping on lukewarm water mixed with a pinch of turmeric and black pepper. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe the throat. Plus, it’s simple! Just heat water and add the spices, and let him sip on this throughout the day. But watch for any signs of gastrointestinal discomfort or other reactions – if anything seems off, stop it.

Another remedy could be Tulsi (holy basil). You can prepare a tulsi tea by boiling a few leaves in water, and he can drink that a couple of times daily. Tulsi is valued for its ability to manage respiratory issues and can aid in reducing cough frequency. While tea should be warm, make sure it’s not too hot to irritate the throat further.

Be mindful about the food he eats; avoiding cold, oily, and excessively spicy foods can sometimes help reduce the cough triggers. Incorporate warm, cooked meals with simple spices.

Breathing exercises, like simple Pranayama, could also be beneficial. Techniques such as Anulom Vilom can help in calming the mind and enhancing lung function, but it’s critical to do them gently, considering his condition.

Stay vigilant for any serious signs of respiratory distress and consult his doctor if any concerns arise. The primary intention here is to provide comfort and support his overall well-being without interfering with essential medical care. Remember to approach these practices with openness and flexibility; health is a personal journey with many paths.
