In managing rheumatoid arthritis, Ayurveda focuses on balancing the doshas, particularly Vata dosha, which is often aggravated in such conditions. While you’re on medication, integrating some Ayurvedic principles alongside can be helpful.
First, diet plays a vital role in managing inflammation and pain. Incorporate warm, cooked meals including freshly prepared khichdi with moong dal, as it’s gentle on digestion. Avoid excessive intake of cold, dry, and raw foods. Add spices like turmeric and ginger to your meals, as they have natural anti-inflammatory properties.
Hydration is equally essential. Drink warm water throughout the day. You can sip on ginger tea or add some cumin seeds to your boiling water for better digestion.
Routine also matters. Try to maintain regular mealtimes and include moderate, non-strenuous exercises into your daily routine, like gentle yoga or walking, to help maintain mobility. Rest is also important to avoid over-exertion.
For the swelling and pain in your hands, applying a warm sesame oil or mahanarayan oil gently may provide relief. Regular oil massages can improve circulation and promote joint flexibility. You can do this early morning or before you sleep at night.
Applying heat packs on sore joints is another simple yet efficient way to manage swelling and pain. However, be cautious about extreme temperatures to prevent skin burns.
Consider practicing breathing exercises, like pranayama, to improve overall wellbeing by reducing stress, which can exacerbates symptoms. Meditation can also be beneficial in calming the mind and body.
Remember though, consistant check-ups with your healthcare provider is essential, and integrating these suggestions should complement, not replace, your current treatment. It’s always best to tailor these practices under guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner, considering your body constitution and any other conditions.
