Premature greying and hairfall are often linked to imbalances in the doshas, particularly Pitta dosha, and can be influenced by factors such as stress, diet, and lifestyle. While Ayurveda offers many remedies, it’s important to understand that reversing the process of greying may not be entirely possible, especially if it has advanced significantly. However, you can slow it down and encourage healthier hair growth. To start addressing these issues, ensure that you are managing stress effectively, as stress is a known aggravator of Pitta dosha. Practice mindfulness or yoga regularly to help stabilize emotional wellbeing. For your diet, focus on Pitta-pacifying foods, including a lot of fresh vegetables and sweet, cooling fruits like melons and pears. Avoid spicy, fried, and overly salty foods, which can aggravate Pitta. Integrate more ghee and coconut oil into your diet, as they are calming for Pitta and nourishing for the hair. A very effective Ayurvedic remedy for hair health is Amla (Indian Gooseberry). It can be consumed in the form of juice or powder (about 1 tsp daily with warm water) and applied as an oil or paste for the scalp. Another important remedy is Bhringraj oil, which is extremely nourishing for the hair. You can warm a small amount of bhringraj oil and massage it into your scalp once or twice a week, leaving it on for about an hour before washing. Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic formulation that can balance the doshas and support healthy digestion, ultimately affecting hair health. You can take Triphala churna around 1/2 to 1 teaspoon with warm water at bedtime. Maintain a digestive fire or ‘Agni’ by avoiding cold and leftover foods. Opt for freshly prepared meals that are easier to digest. Finally, incorporate regular sleep and exercise into your routine – aim for 7-8 hours of sleep and find an exercise that you enjoy, such as brisk walking or swimming, to improve circulation, which benefits hair growth. Consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized treatment can further tailor these recommendations to your unique constitution or Prakriti, enhancing effectiveness.
