Runny nose and sneezing are often a result of an imbalance in your dosha, likely a disturbance in your Kapha dosha, sometimes also involving Vata. In such cases, it’s essential to target the root cause, which for many includes internal imbalances and environmental triggers.
1. Dietary Adjustments: Begin by reducing intake of Kapha-aggravating foods, such as dairy, sugar, cold and processed foods. Instead, choose light, warming foods like ginger, black pepper, and turmeric which help pacify Kapha and enhance digestion (Agni).
2. Herbal Remedies: Consider using a formulation like Trikatu, a combination of black pepper, long pepper, and ginger, which helps regulate Kapha and improve respiratory function. One to two grams before meals, with warm water, can aid digestion and detoxification.
3. Nasya Therapy: Try Nasya therapy, which involves the application of medicated oils or herbal formulations through the nose. Anu Tailam can be used; just a couple of drops in each nostril in the morning, preferably on an empty stomach, can help clear nasal passages.
4. Breathing Exercises: Pranayama and alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) is effective at balancing Vata and Kapha and improving overall respiratory health. Practice these daily for at least 10 minutes.
5. Avoidance: Identify and minimize exposure to allergens or cold environments that might trigger your symptoms.
If symptoms persist or worsen, consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner in person to ensure the suggestions are tailored to your specific Prakriti and Vikriti. This approach, coupled with patience, often yields the best and most lasting results.
