How to gain body weight in hyperthyroidism? - #28162

Geeta Devi

My name is Geeta Devi. I am a 24-year-old female. My height is 4.6 feet and my body weight is 41 kg. I have hypothyroidism, and my TSH level is 7.65 mIU/L. Earlier my weight used to be 52–53 kg, but for the last 4 years my weight has decreased. Since my weight loss, I have been facing many health issues. How can I gain weight? I am already taking hypothyroidism medicine. Can I also take multivitamin tablets? And please suggest me some solutions to gain weight.

To address your concerns, let’s focus on tailored Ayurvedic strategies to support weight gain alongside your current hypothyroidism treatment. Firstly, it’s essential to work with your healthcare provider to ensure that your thyroid medication is effectively managing your condition. Since you’re asking about multivitamins, generally, they’re safe to use alongside thyroid medication, but it’s best to confirm this with your doctor to avoid any interactions.

In Ayurveda terms, we might be dealing with a vitiation in Kapha dosha and a weakened digestive fire, or Agni, which can result in decreased nutrient absorption. Rejuvenating and nourishing approaches can help. Start by consuming a balanced diet rich in nourishing and easily digestible foods. An Ayurvedic approach would include:

1. Dietary Adjustments: Incorporate warm, cooked foods like kitchari and soups into your meals, as they are easy to digest. Use whole grains like brown rice or quinoa and good fats like ghee, sesame oil, or coconut oil, which can help maintain energy levels and support weight gain. Add root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots for grounding energy.

2. Herbs and Tonics: Consider taking Ashwagandha, a known adaptogen that can help with weight gain by enhancing strength and endurance. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized dosage.

3. Lifestyle Practices: Follow a regular eating schedule, which is crucial for balancing Agni. Small, frequent meals can provide a continuous supply of nutrients to your body. Try to maintain a consistent routine with ample rest, as stress management is key in maintaining hormonal balance. Avoid over-exercising as it can further deplete your energy reserves; gentle yoga can be beneficial.

4. Digestive Support: Sip on warm herbal teas like ginger or peppermint before meals can help stimulate Agni. Avoid cold beverages or raw foods, as they can dampen digestive fire.

5. Mind and Body Practices: Engage in regular Abhyanga (self-massage with sesame oil) that provides nourishment and helps relax the body and mind. Pranayama and meditation can also support overall wellness.

Remember to track your progress and stay in regular communication with your healthcare provider, paying attention to any changes in symptoms or overall well-being. If you experience any adverse symptoms, consult your medical professional immediately.

For weight gain in hypothyroidism, it’s important to address both the hypothyroidism management and nutritional aspects to support your body. Hypothyroidism, with an elevated TSH level like yours, usually leads to weight gain difficulties as the metabolic rate is slowed. Here are some Siddha-Ayurvedic inspired suggestions that could be incorporated alongside your current treatment, but it’s essential to keep coordinating with your healthcare provider for medication:

First, focus on improving agni, the digestive fire. This can be enhanced by consuming warm, easily digestible foods that stimulate metabolism. Cooked vegetables, whole grains like brown rice, and legumes should be staples in your diet. Include spices such as ginger, cumin, black pepper, turmeric, and mustard seeds, which are known to enhance digestion and metabolic processes.

Jointly, nurturing the sapta dhatus, or seven tissue layers, is key to healthy weight gain. Add healthy fats like ghee and coconut oil as they help nourish the body’s tissues. Consuming nuts and seeds, such as almonds and flaxseeds, are beneficial as well, due to their high nutrient content.

Simultaneously, consider incorporation of Ashwagandha, a classical adaptogen known for its ability to manage stress, which can indirectly affect thyroid function. It may also aid in muscle gain and vitality, supporting healthy weight gain.

Regarding multivitamins, they can complement dietary intake, but it is crucial to choose ones suited for your condition. Vitamin D, B-complex, and selenium are some nutrients that can support thyroid function — but consult with your doctor before starting any new supplement to ensure there are no contraindications with your current medications.

Regular physical activity like yoga and gentle strength exercises could help increase muscle mass and improve metabolic rates. Furthermore, pranayama, such as Nadi Shodhana and Ujjayi breathing, can help regulate the body’s energy channels and enhance thyroid functions.

Monitor your symptoms and have regular check-ups to adjust your thyroid medication if needed. This holistic approach, integrating dietary strategies, ayurvedic herbs, and lifestyle modifications, can contribute towards achieving a healthier weight balance.
