What can be done to prevent vitamin B12 deficiency? - #32167

Sanjay Niranjan

My cheeks have shrunk due to tobacco. I suspect I may get cancer in the future. And I am also losing the muscle in my lower jaw. After some time, my cheeks turn red. I apply turmeric and treat it. No one takes medicine.

Hlo sanjay niranjan,

Thanks for your question B12 is an important vitamin needed by red blood cells for maturation and DNA synthesis of myelin- producing oligodendrocytes. It remarkably supports the regeneration of nerves after injury. The symptoms of its deficiency range from glossitis to severe demyelination of nervous tissue.

Ayurvedic Approaches to Enhance Vitamin B12 Levels:-

Dietary Modifications:

Ayurveda recommends a diet rich in B12-containing foods for those at risk of deficiency. While B12 is primarily found in animal products, Ayurveda suggests incorporating dairy products, eggs, and certain fermented foods into the diet. These can be tailored to an individual’s dosha to ensure optimal absorption.

Chyawanprash:

Chyawanprash, a traditional Ayurvedic herbal jam, is known for its rejuvenating properties. It contains a combination of herbs, including Amla (Indian gooseberry), which is a good source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is believed to enhance the absorption of B12. Including Chyawanprash in your daily routine may contribute to overall health and well-being.

Triphala for Digestive Health:

Ayurveda places great emphasis on digestive health, as proper digestion is crucial for nutrient absorption. Triphala, a combination of three fruits (Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki), is commonly used to support digestive function. A healthy digestive system ensures efficient absorption of nutrients, including B12.

Yogic Practices and Pranayama:

Incorporating yogic practices and pranayama (breath control exercises) into one’s routine is another Ayurvedic approach to enhance overall vitality. Specific asanas (postures) and pranayama techniques, when practiced regularly, are believed to improve circulation, boost energy levels, and support overall well-being.

In your situation, reducing tobacco use is key in preventing further damage and potential cancer. Tobacco’s detrimental effects on health are substantial, including increased cancer risk, especially in the oral cavity. Quitting tobacco is the single most important step you can take. Seek help from a healthcare provider or support group specialized in tobacco cessation.

For the shrinking cheeks and muscle loss, consider examining your diet for protein and nutrient content. Ensure sufficient protein intake, from sources like mung dal or lentils for vegetarians, or lean meat and fish for non-vegetarians. Additionally, vitamin B12 found in supplements or animal products can help with muscle maintenance. Both can aid in repairing tissue and strengthening your jaw muscles.

You report redness in the cheeks, which turmeric has been used for. This could be a sign of irritation or minor skin issue. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties might help, but it’s not sufficient alone. Consider consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner to understand your particular dosha imbalance and receive a personalized treatment plan, possibly involving herbs like neem or haridra that might be suited to your prakriti.

It’s essential to enhance your digestive fire, or agni, to improve nutrient absorption. Incorporate small amounts of ginger, cumin, or ajwain before meals to stimulate it. These are simple remedies that can be included in your regular diet without much effort.

For cancer preventive measures and further assessment of your oral health, see an oral specialist to rule out precancerous conditions. Address this as a priority since early detection of health issues is crucial. Remember, your oral health affects your overall well-being.

Since you’ve been using tobacco and notice changes in your cheeks and jaw muscles, it’s important to consider these as risk factors for more serious conditions like cancer. It would be best to stop using tobacco as it not only causes oral cancer but can also lead to other serious health issues. You should consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination and any necessary screenings. This is important because they can assess any potential damage and provide you with appropriate treatment or preventive measures.

In terms of Ayurveda, addressing dosha imbalances (primarily Vata associated with dryness and decay) could help. Start by promoting Ojas (vital essence) and nourishment of the Rakta and Mamsa Dhatus by increasing Kapha through dietary adjustments. Incorporate foods like avocados, ghee, and almonds which are nourishing and help restore tissue strength. You might also benefit from herbal formulations like Ashwagandha which is known for supporting muscle health.

Consider performing daily oil pulling with sesame oil to strengthen oral tissues and promote detoxification. Apply a mixture of turmeric and coconut oil externally which might help with inflammation and redness. However, these should not substitute professional medical guidance—especially given the potential for cancer.

It’s essential to understand that while turmeric application may alleviate redness, it isn’t a comprehensive treatment for the potential health risks associated with tobacco use. Regular check-ups are advised to monitor any developments. Prioritize safety, and seek immediate attention if there’s an escalation in symptoms.
