Hello Seema, what kind of cough is it and since when? What is the colour of sputum? Do you get wheezes as swell? Any other symptoms? Avoid cold foods and oily, heavy foods in general. Avoid fried food as well. Do you suffer from hyperacidity? As of now have 1/4 tsp of yashtimadhu powder mixed with 1/4 tsp honey twice in the day (morning on empty stomach & night after dinner.) Stay away from AC, direct fan , winds etc Don’t head bath at night.

The nighttime cough, accompanied by pain in the left side of your chest or rib area while coughing, suggests an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas. In Ayurveda, nighttime coughs are often related to the accumulation of Kapha in the respiratory system, leading to congestion and irritation in the chest. The pain in the chest or rib area may be due to the strain caused by continuous coughing, which can also aggravate Vata, leading to discomfort and a tight feeling in the chest. To address this, you can use Sitopaladi churna or Talisadi churna, which are excellent for balancing Kapha and relieving cough. These herbs help clear mucus, ease congestion, and soothe the respiratory tract. Dashamula can also be helpful in reducing Vata-related chest pain and supporting lung health. You can take warm Tulsi tea with honey to soothe the throat and alleviate cough. For external application, you can use warm Mahanarayan oil or Sesame oil to gently massage the chest and rib area, which will help reduce the Vata imbalance and ease the pain. Avoid cold foods and drinks, as they can increase Kapha and worsen the cough. Instead, focus on warm, light foods that are easy to digest. Practicing steam inhalation with eucalyptus oil can further relieve congestion and promote easier breathing at night.

Coughing at night and feeling pain in the left side of your chest or rib can be really uncomfortable and bothersome. From an ayurvedic perspective, this might be linked to an imbalance in the vata dosha, which, when out of whack, can cause disturbance in the respiratory system and, quite directly, discomfort in the muscles and bones of the chest area. First off, let’s think about your lifestyle and how it might be affecting you. Try to avoid cold and dry foods; they can aggravate vata. Instead go for warm, moist foods like soups with a bit of ginger, which can be soothing. Stay clear of dehydration - maybe drink warm water or herbal tea, especially a soothing one like Tulsi, which is known for its benefits in respiratory health. Breathing exercises and gentle yoga can also be helpful. Pranayama practices like Anulom Vilom can help in strengthening the respiratory system and calming the mind which might be causing a part of this discomfort. Applying warm sesame oil on the chest and rib area, specifically where you feel the pain, could provide relief. This could ease any muscle tension and support your body in recalibrating the discomfort you feel. If the coughing and pain continues to persists, it might be really important to check with a healthcare provider to make sure there’s nothing more serious going on, like a rib injury or something. Coughing for a prolonged period and associated pain could sometimes hint at something more that might need a medical intervention. In Ayurveda, understanding your dosha is crucial, so it could be a good idea to explore your prakriti (natural constitution) further to make more personalized dietary and lifestyle choices. Always keep your agni (digestive fire) in check too; it’s vital for overall health and helping your system keep those pesky symptoms away!
