what are the benefits of drinking hot water - #37229

Emma

I am really curious about this whole hot water thing... like, what are the benefits of drinking hot water? Lately, I’ve been feeling kinda sluggish and bloated after my meals, which honestly makes me think twice about how I’m taking care of myself. A friend of mine keeps mentioning she feels sooo much better since she started drinking warm water every day, and she says it helps with digestion and even her skin looks clearer. I’m just wondering if that’s true? 🙄 Last week I had this pretty intense upset stomach after pizza night (I know, not the wisest choice). 😅 My friend told me to try sipping on hot water first thing in the morning and before meals, but I’m still skeptical, ya know? Does drinking hot water really help with digestion like she claims? I mean, I read somewhere that it can help detox the body—whatever that means—but then I thought, do I really need to be detoxing? I’m also worried it might not really do anything, I don't want to waste time on another "health trend." 😩 What are the actual benefits of drinking hot water? Also, is there a right way to do it? I'm kinda lost here. Thanks in advance!

Drinking hot water’s benefits are supported both by Ayurveda and modern understanding of health. According to Ayurvedic principles, drinking warm water can enhance digestion and help with detoxification processes in your body. Feeling sluggish and bloated as you’ve described might be linked to what’s known in Ayurveda as weak digestive fire or “agni.” Enhancing this agni can alleviate symptoms like bloating and improve digestion, and warm water serves as a simple yet effective way to do this.

When you consume warm water, it acts gently to stimulate the gastric secretion and improve the gut’s overall function. This essentially helps break down the food more efficiently, preventing bloating and sluggishness post meals. Additionally, warm water may facilitate bowel movements, preventing constipation which often occurs when digestion is sluggish.

In terms of detoxification, your body naturally eliminates toxins through waste, but drinking warm water can support this process. It encourages circulation and perspiration which can help eliminate toxins through the skin and kidney function as it mildly increases body temperature and stimulates metabolic activity.

For clear skin, this might be due to enhanced circulation and the body’s detoxification, both of which promote skin health. Improved hydration and circulation tend to lead to healthier skin appearance over time, though it’s not a direct miracle cure for everyone.

When considering how to utilize warm water for best results, consistency is key. Drink a cup of warm water first thing in the morning to kickstart the digestive process and just before meals to aid digestion. Water should be warm, not scorching hot, to prevent any internal harm. Sip slowly rather than gulping to avoid overwhelming the digestive system.

As for detoxing, it’s essential to understand that optimal digestion itself is a part of your body’s natural detoxification mechanism. If you’re generally healthy, you don’t necessarily need to follow specific detox routines. However, incorporating warm water consumption into your routine offers a gentle and supportive measure for digestion and overall wellbeing.

Feel free to reach out to an Ayurvedic practitioner if you’re interested in customized advice, especially if your sluggishness or digestive discomfort persists.
