My practitioner, here in America, is telling me to take 4 Neem tablets with each meal. 3 meals a day=12 Neem tablets a day. Banyan Botanicals Neem tablets. I feel it's too much. Is that even a safe amount to take? Thank you.

Thank you very much, Dr. Sushma.

Taking 12 Neem tablets a day, without a specific diagnosis and reasoning tailored to your prakriti or individual constitution, may not be safe. Neem has potent properties and the dosage should be adjusted based on its purpose and your body’s specific needs. In Ayurveda, Neem is often used for its cooling, detoxifying, and anti-bacterial properties. However, excessive consumption can lead to imbalances, particularly of Vata and Pitta doshas, which may not suit everyone.

It’s crucial to look into what these tablets contain in terms of concentration. If they’re high in potency or if Neem powder is the primary content, 12 a day might indeed be excessive. Make sure to discuss this further with your practitioner. Understanding the concentration of active ingredients in each tablet is essential. Usually, a standardized dosage for Neem would typically not exceed a couple of grams a day, unless under specific guidance for a therapeutic intervention.

Look for any signs of upset stomach, dizziness, reduced mental alertness, or if you feel excessively cold. These might indicate an imbalance. In general, Neem should be used with caution in cases where there’s already a presence of weakened digestion (agni), as it could further weaken it, affecting absorption and leading to nutrient deficiencies over time.

Consider discussing alternative ways to incorporate Neem, possibly through a herbal blend that balances its potency. Also, how your diet and lifestyle coincide with your constitution can further influence how Neem affects you. Integrating warming herbs or foods might be advisable if Neem tends to cool your system excessively.

Ultimately, validating the dosage and modifying it to your specific circumstance with the help of an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner would be the best approach. Stay attentive to any adverse reactions and mark any changes in your symptoms or overall well-being.
