HELLO,

Your 3 year old son 14 kg has recurrent wheezing and breathing difficulty for several months, usually worse at night or with dust/allergens. He improves with nebulisation and oral steroid (prednisolone), which means -The air tubes in his lungs are becoming narrowed and inflamed -Thick mucus and swelling make it hard for air to move freely -the nebuliser opes up the airway, the steroid reduces inflammation

In modern terms, this is called “childhood asthma” or recurrent wheeze

In Ayurveda, this correlates to Tamaka shwasa- a long term respiratory disorder involving kapha (mucus) , vata (air movement imbalance) and weak digestion/immunity

WHY THIS HAPPENS

-KAPHA DOSHA= becomes aggravated due to cold foods, pollution , dust, damp weather, or weak digestion

-VATA DOSHA= gets blocked by this excess kapha, causing wheezing or breathlessness

-The respiratory channels become sticky and narrow, leading to recurrent attacks

-The child’s digestive fire and immunity get reduced so even the little dust or cold air triggers symptoms

So the aim is not just to suppress wheezing, but to -clear the excess mucus and toxins -restore digestion and metabolism -streghten lungs and immunity

INTERNAL MEDICATIONS

1) SITOPALADI CHURNA + TALISADI CHURA mixed with hone 1/4 tsp total mix twice daily after meals for 2 months =lightens mucus, improves breathing, balances kapha

2) KANTAKARI AVALEHA= 5 ml twice daily for 3 months = bronchodilator , anti inflammatory, improves lung tone

3) SWASKUTHAR RAS= 1/2 tab twice daily with honey for 2 weeks = for chronic cough/wheeze; reduces phlegm

4) CHYAWANPRASHA (child variant)= 1/2 tsp morning =rasayana, strengthens lungs and immunity

5) DRAKSHARISHTA= 3ml + 6ml warm water after meals for 2 months =improves appetite and digestion

HOME SUPPORT= TULSI JUICE + HONEY= 1 tsp mix once daily =clears cough, boosts immunity

EXTERNAL THERAPIES

1) OIL MASSAGE= warm mustard oil with a pinch of ajwain rubbed gently on chest, back, and soles, followed by warm bath =improves circulation, reduces vata, loosen mucus

2) LEPA PASTE APPLICATION= paste of dry ginger + ajwain + salt (warm, not hot) applied on chest for 5-10 min =helps liquify phlegm and ease breathing

3) STEAM INHALATION= steam from water with tulsi leaves, ajwain or vasa leaves = opens airway, clears nasal congestion

4) NASYA= instill 2 drops of warm Anu taila In each nostril once daily mroning = keeps nasal passages clear, reduces allergy tendency

DIET -warm soups, moong dal, rice gruel, vegetables broth -light meals with ghee in small amount -spices like dry ginger, black pepper, cumin ,turmeric - warm water throughout the day can infuse with tulsi or ginger -seasonal fruits- apple, pomegranate, papaya

AVOID -cold,refrigerated or leftover foods -ice cream, curd, cheese, milk at night -banana, guava, fried and heavy foods -cold drinks, or sweet in excess

SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES -tulsi + honey + ginger juie= 1/2 tsp daily -ajwain pottali steam= dry roast ajwain, wrap in cloth, inhale warm vapors -haldi milk at night -turmeric ghee on chest= soothes mild wheeze

LIFESTYLE -keep the child warm, avoid sudden cold air or fa directly on face -maintain clean dust free bedroom, wash soft toys and bedding weekly -use an air purifier or humidifier if room is dry or dusty -daily gentle play based breathig -blowing bubbles or ballons -“candle blowing” game- short, long breaths -Gentle child friendly asanas = tadasana, marjariasana, bhujangasana -avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, incense, mosqito coils, or strong perfumes -Ensure adequate sleep 10-12 hrs and regular routine

Your child’s condition is manageable and often outgrown by school age with proper care Focus o regular routines, light warm diet, and keeping environmental allergen free

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

Wheezing and breathing difficulties in children can be due to various reasons such as allergies, asthma or respiratory infections. From an Ayurvedic perspective, these symptoms are often associated with an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas, which can lead to excess mucus production and airway obstruction.

In Ayurveda, managing such conditions involves balancing the doshas and strengthening the respiratory system. Starting with dietary adjustments, introduce warm foods that are easy to digest, avoiding cold and heavy foods that can increase Kapha and mucus production. Including spices like ginger and turmeric in his meals can help improve digestion and reduce inflammation. Ginger tea made by boiling a few slices of fresh ginger in water could be given in small amounts during the day if tolerated.

Herbal remedies such as Sitopaladi Churna and Talisadi Churna are traditionally used to support respiratory health, although it’s important to consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for precise dosage tailored to your son’s needs. Breathing steam infused with eucalyptus or peppermint oil might serve to ease congestion, but ensure the steam isn’t too hot, as it could be harsh on young lungs.

Regarding long-term use of medications like prednisolone, it’s crucial to follow the pediatrician’s guidelines, as they are best positioned to monitor your son’s condition and adjust treatment as necessary. Sudden withdrawal without professional advice is not advisable. Moreover, try to reduce potential allergens such as dust by keeping the living environment clean, and using air purifiers if needed.

Ayurveda emphasizes routine, so regularizing his daily life, including sleep and meals, plays also a vital part in maintaining balance. This holistic approach, while supportive, should always complement the guidance of your healthcare professional and not replace it, especially in young children where careful monitoring is crucial.
