Doctors' responses
Your son’s symptoms may indicate that his digestive system is experiencing some imbalances that are not necessarily identifiable through conventional tests like endoscopy. In Ayurveda, such symptoms can often be related to an imbalance of the doshas, particularly Vata and Pitta. The sensation of fullness and the lack of appetite could suggest an imbalance in the digestive fire or ‘Agni’, leading to improper digestion.
As he’s experiencing pain in the upper back at night and gas, we might look at the possibility of ‘Vishama Agni’, where the digestion is irregular and varies. This can further cause accumulation of ‘Ama’—undigested food toxins—leading to feelings of fullness, weight stagnation, and discomfort.
For addressing these issues, consider the following:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Focus on warm, cooked, and easily digestible meals. Encourage the use of spices like cumin, coriander, fennel, and ginger to stimulate digestion. Avoid foods that are heavy, greasy, or excessively dry, and favor small, frequent meals rather than large sittings. Steer clear of eating late at night; the dinner should be light and consumed at least 2 hours before sleeping.
2. Hydration and Herbal Teas: Start the day by offering him warm water with a bit of lemon juie to ignite his Agni. Herbal teas prepared from ingredients such as ginger, licorice or chamomile can be soothing and help reduce bloating.
3. Routine and Lifestyle: Establish regular meal times to help regulate Agni. Encouraging him to consciously chew his food thoroughly. Moderate physical activity suited to his energy levels can also support healthy digestion.
4. Ayurvedic Remedies: Triphala can be useful for maintaining digestive regularity. Give him a teaspoon of Triphala mixed with warm water before bed can aid in detoxification.
It’s essential to continue monitoring his symptoms and consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can adjust treatment as needed. If any symptoms worsen or new troubling symptoms emerge, consult to a healthcare professional immediately as underlying conditions may need further exploration.
Thank you very much for the reply. I have one more thing to ask. He is not gaining weight for the past few months. We have done the CBC blood test recently and it shows HB count 14.3. We had done the same test as prescribed by the doctor 4 months ago. Then it showed the count 12.7. Doctor suggested that he is ok. Why he is not gaining weight?
From an Ayurvedic perspective, your son’s gastrointestinal issues and feelings of fullness early in the morning can often be associated with imbalances in the doshas, particularly an aggravated Vata and sometimes kapha doshas. The symptoms you’ve described, like the feeling of fullness, back pain, and gas, might suggest a disturbance in the digestive fire, or ‘Agni.’ When Agni is weak, it can lead to improper digestion and accumulation of gas, causing discomfort and pain.
To help address these concerns, focus on enhancing his digestive fire and balancing the doshas. Begin by adjusting his diet to be more supportive of Agni. Encourage him to eat lighter, easily digestible foods, such as warm soups, stews, and cooked vegetables, avoiding raw or heavy foods like dairy or fried items, especially in the evening. To aid digestion, have him sip on warm water throughout the day. Adding a pinch of ginger to his meals or offering him ginger tea can also help stimulate Agni.
Incorporating a daily routine for strengthening digestion would be beneficial. A gentle abdominal massage with warm sesame oil can help relieve gas and ease discomfort. This should be done in clockwise circular movements, ideally in the evening. Encourage him to engage in moderate physical activity, like a short walk or light yoga, to encourage movement and balance Vata and Kapha.
Given his age and the nature of symptoms, it’s essential to keep monitoring his condition closely. If symptoms persist or worsen, follow up with a healthcare provider to ensure no underlying conditions are being overlooked.
