When considering knee replacement surgery, especially for someone with existing health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and thyroid imbalances, it’s crucial to weigh both risks and benefits meticulously. Knee replacement becomes considered typically when there’s severe degeneration – as indicated by terms like “stage-IV condition”. Surgery can relieve pain and improve mobility, but the decision should be made cautiously given her other medical conditions.

Diabetes and hypertension can increase the risk of complications during and after surgery; however, that doesn’t make surgery inherently unsafe. Managing these conditions well prior to surgery is essential. Your mother’s blood sugar levels and blood pressure need careful monitoring and stabilization. The doctors will assess her current health status, likely consulting a team that includes endocrinologists and cardiologists, to ensure she can withstand surgery without undue risk.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, it’s important to keep Dosha balance for overall physical well-being. For Vata imbalance (typical in degenerative joint diseases), dietary changes might aid with symptom relief. Encourage warm, nourishing foods and drinks. Herbs like Ashwagandha can be beneficial for joint health, and herbal oils for gentle massage - such as Mahanarayan oil - might offer some relief to knee pain. Remember, though, these measures won’t regenerate cartilage or reverse significant joint damage.

If she proceeds with surgery, post-operative care and physio exercises will be vital to regain mobility. Inquiry with her doctor about rehab protocols. Ayurveda can complement this step by supporting joint and bone health, boosting recovery. It’s about harmonizing conventional and Ayurvedic healing methods, keeping safety paramount - follow all medical advice thoroughly and ask for a second opinion if needed.
