A severe sinus infection with symptoms like pain, congestion, and nasal drip often signals an imbalance that Ayurveda attributes to the Kapha dosha. Addressing this requires specific, practical steps. Begin by incorporating Nasya therapy, which involves applying medicated oils or a lukewarm sesame oil gently into the nostrils. Do this daily, preferably in the morning, to help clear the sinus pathways. However, it is vital to consult a qualified practitioner for appropriate oils, since personal Dosha imbalances must be considered.

Steam inhalation can also effectively relieve congestion. Add a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil to hot water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale deeply for 10 minutes. Do it twice daily to open up the blocked sinuses and facilitate easy breathing.

A daily gargle with warm salt water can reduce throat irritation caused by post-nasal drip. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle after meals.

Additionally, restrict consumption of Kapha-aggravating foods like dairy, cold drinks, and sugary substances that may intensify mucus production. Favor warm, easily digestible foods such as light soups and stews, incorporating spices like ginger, black pepper, and turmeric which support digestion and reduce Kapha buildup.

Stay well-hydrated, but avoid ice-cold beverages. Instead, sip on warm herbal teas throughout the day, especially those with ginger or tulsi, known for their respiratory benefits.

If the pain and congestion remain severe or worsen, it is crucial to seek immediate medical evaluation, as untreated sinus infections can lead to complications. Adopt these Ayurvedic practices as supportive measures while maintaining clear communication with your healthcare provider for comprehensive care.

When addressing a severe sinus infection with these symptoms, it’s important to target both the immediate discomfort and the underlying imbalance. In Siddha-Ayurvedic terms, your symptoms suggest a Kapha imbalance, with congestion and excess mucus production. To ease these issues, start with steam inhalation using 2-3 drops of eucalyptus or even peppermint oil added to hot water — inhale deeply for a few minutes to help open nasal passages and thin mucus.

Additionally, neti pot saline irrigation can be beneficial in clearing out the nasal passages. Make sure to use lukewarm water with non-iodized salt. Do this once daily, preferably in the morning, to maintain clear nasal pathways.

For internally balancing Kapha, avoid cold, heavy, sweet, and oily foods, which can increase mucus production. Instead, opt for warming spices like ginger, black pepper, and turmeric. A common remedy is to drink warm ginger tea multiple times a day, prepared by simmering fresh slices of ginger in water. Add a pinch of turmeric and a dash of honey for improved taste.

You could also consider a Siddha formulation like Thalisadi Churna, known for supporting respiratory health. However, consult a practitioner before use for personalized advice and dosage.

In addition, keep yourself adequately hydrated and practice gentle pranayama breathing exercises, focusing on Kapalabhati, which can help clear the sinuses and improve respiratory function.

If any of the symptoms worsen or you continue to experience severe pain and difficulty breathing, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly, as there could be a risk of complications requiring conventional medical intervention, only Ayurveda might not be enough in such scenarios.
