Ayurvedic Remedies for Chronic Constipation 1. Gentle, Safe Daily Remedies a. Triphala Churna (classical choice) 1 teaspoon in warm water at bedtime. If stools are still hard, increase to 1.5 tsp. 👉 It detoxifies the colon and gently stimulates peristalsis. b. Ghee and Milk Therapy (excellent for dry constipation) Warm 1 cup milk + 1 tsp cow ghee. Drink before bedtime daily for 10–15 days. 👉 Lubricates intestines and softens stool. c. Isabgol (Psyllium husk) 1 tablespoon in a glass of warm water before bed. Add a few drops of lemon if it feels heavy. 2. Stronger Ayurvedic Options (if the above fails) (Use under guidance, but generally safe for chronic constipation) Gandharvahastadi Kashayam – 15 ml + 45 ml water before dinner Hingvashtak Churna – 1 tsp with ghee before meals (reduces gas and bloating) Eranda Tailam (Castor oil) – 1 tsp in warm milk once or twice a week (mild purgative) 3. Dietary Guidelines ✅ Eat: Warm, freshly cooked meals Ghee, sesame oil, soups, stews, and moong dal Ripe fruits: papaya, figs (anjeer soaked), prunes, banana Lukewarm water throughout the day 🚫 Avoid: Cold foods and drinks, raw salads, dry snacks, excessive tea/coffee Fried or processed foods Late-night eating or skipping meals 4. Lifestyle Tips Wake up early (5:30–6:00 am) — natural Vata time, helps bowel movement. Drink a glass of warm water with a pinch of rock salt or lemon juice first thing in morning. Gentle yoga: Pavanmuktasana, Malasana, Vajrasana after meals. Abhyanga (oil massage) with sesame oil 3–4 times a week — improves circulation and bowel tone.

Addressing constipation through Ayurveda involves understanding your unique dosha imbalance and digestive function. Kefir and chia seeds are generally supportive of digestion, but they may not target the root cause of your specific issue. It’s essential to examine your dietary habits, lifestyle, and potential stressors.

First, consider incorporating Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic remedy renowned for its gentle laxative effect. Take one teaspoon of Triphala powder with warm water before bed; this can help regulate bowel movements by balancing Vata dosha and strengthening agni, your digestive fire. Adjust the dose based on your body’s reaction—if too strong reduce the amount.

Hydration is key. Ensure you’re consuming about 2 to 3 liters of water daily, specifically warm water, as it eases digestion. Avoid cold drinks or ice-cold foods, which can hinder digestive fire. Herbal teas like cumin, coriander and fennel seeds steeped together can be soothing and promote digestion. Reduce intake of caffeine and alcohol, as they might exacerbate dehydration.

Your daily diet matters too. Emphasize foods that are easily digestible, such as cooked vegetables like squash, spinach, beets, and carrots. Use spices like ginger and turmeric, which stimulate digestion. Ghee added to your meals can lubricate the intestines and help with smoother bowel function.

Incorporate routine exercise such as a brisk walk for 20-30 minutes each day or yoga poses like Pavanamuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose) to encourage movement in the colon. A consistent sleep schedule aids in maintaining regular bowel movements. If stress is a factor, practices like meditation or breathing exercises can be beneficial.

Remember, these practices should complement your lifestyle and dietary habits. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting with a healthcare professional is advisable.
