how to take triphala powder at night - #41958

Abigail

I am really confused about how to take triphala powder at night. A couple of weeks ago, I heard about its benefits from a friend, and honestly, I’m intrigued. My digestion has been off for a while like really bloated after meals, and I feel sluggish all the time. One night, I thought, why not give triphala a try? I mixed some powder in water before bed, but let me tell you, the taste was… not great, to say the least. Then, I read somewhere that it could help with sleep too? I can’t tell if it’s working because I’m still waking up multiple times at night. My gut issues feel kinda better, but I'm still uncertain about the timing. I mean, should I take it before eating or right before sleep? Also, I’m worried I took too much because I felt like I needed the loo like, ALL night! Is there a proper way to take triphala at night that would help with my digestion and maybe improve my sleep? If anyone has advice or personal experiences, that would be super helpful 😊. Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

Triphala is indeed well-regarded in Ayurveda for its ability to support digestion and promote overall rejuvenation, but it does require some care in usage, especially if you’re new to it. To make the most of triphala in the evening, it’s essential to get the amount and timing right. Generally, 1/2 teaspoon (around 2-3 grams) is considered a safe starting dose, particularly if you’re feeling bloated or sluggish after meals. If the taste is challenging, consider mixing it with warm water. This not only helps with the absorption of its benefits but can aid in digestion.

Taking triphala about 1-2 hours after having dinner is recommended, which allows it to assist in cleansing your digestive tract without overly stimulating your system before bedtime. Trying it out right before sleep might indeed lead to frequent loo trips, which interrupts sleep. So timing matters!

As for the bloated feeling, triphala may eventually help balance Vata dosha, which could be contributing to your symptoms. However, its effects on sleep are indirect. The herb doesn’t directly promote sleep but by improving digestion and supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes overnight, it might contribute to a more restful sleep.

If your sleep disturbances continue to persist, it might be beneficial to explore broader lifestyle changes or dietary adjustments also. Staying away from heavy meals close to bedtime and reducing stressors before sleep can also contribute to improved sleep quality. Additionally, establishing a calming night time routine like gentle yoga poses or meditation can be helpful.

Many find that giving the body a little time to adjust to new supplements like triphala is essential. Adjust the quantity based on your body’s response, keeping in mind it shouldn’t cause discomfort. However, listen to your body. If you experience adverse effects or no improvement, consider reevaluating your routine or consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can give more individualized advice based on your unique constitution.
