how to take triphala - #42601
I am dealing with some digestive issues and I’ve heard a lot about triphala lately. A friend suggested it could help, and to be honest, I’m willing to try anything at this point! My stomach has been feeling bloated and I get constipated like once a week. It’s so annoying! I’ve tried changing my diet a bit but I have no clue how to take triphala correctly. Do I take it with warm water or just mix it in food? Like, do I have to take it daily or just when I feel discomfort? Also, I read somewhere that you shouldn’t take triphala at night because it might disrupt sleep. Is that true?? Should I take it in the morning or what? I really want to know what the proper dosage is, like how much I should be taking too. I've seen some places say 1 teaspoon and others say more, it’s confusing! And is there a specific type I should be getting? I totally don’t want to mess this up or anything since I’ve been looking for natural solutions. Anyone's tips on how to take triphala properly would really mean a lot! Thanks!

Doctors' responses
For addressing digestive issues like bloating and constipation, triphala can indeed be beneficial. In classical Ayurvedic texts, triphala is considered a powerful remedy that aids digestion by balancing the doshas, particularly vata and pitta. To start, it’s generally recommended to take triphala in powder form, as it is more potent and quick-acting compared to tablets or capsules.
Mix 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of triphala powder in a glass of warm water. Warm water helps to activate the medicinal properties and ease digestion. Take this mixture before bed, as it’s often beneficial overnight to stimulate a gentle bowel movement by the next morning. Although some worry that taking it at night might disrupt sleep, this typically isn’t the case when taken in reasonable amounts. If you’re particularly sensitive to new supplements and notice any disturbances, you may adjust to taking it in the morning on an empty stomach.
Regarding frequency, you can start with a daily dose and continue it for a few weeks. If your constipation improves, then perhaps reduce to two or three times per week as maintenance. However, make sure to monitor how your body responds as everyone’s digestive system is unique.
Be mindful of the quality of the triphala. Opt for certified organic variants if possible; these are less likely to be contaminated with heavy metals or pesticides. Since triphala has a slightly sour and bitter taste, some people prefer the convenience of capsules. If you choose this route, follow the recommended dosage by the manufacturer.
Stay hydrated and consider incorporating appropriate dietary changes, such as increased fiber intake from fruits and vegetables, to support triphala’s effectiveness. If firmly dealing with chronic digestive issues or if symptoms persist, it’s wise to consult with an ayurvedic physician for tailored advice. Keep in mind that natural remedies, while gentle, require patience and consistency.
