how to take shatavari powder in pregnancy - #44634

Avery

I am super confused about how to take shatavari powder in pregnancy. I’m currently about five months along, and I’ve been reading a lot about the benefits of shatavari for women during pregnancy, especially how it can help with hormonal balance and nourishment. But, like, I don't know the best way to use it. I tried mixing it with water, but the taste is kinda weird and makes me gag a little. 🤢 A friend suggested adding it to smoothies, which sounds better, but I also worry if I'm taking the right amount. I read somewhere that dosing matters a lot, and I don’t want to mess this up! What is the best way how to take shatavari powder in pregnancy? 🤔 Should I mix it with something specific, like honey or milk? I heard that can make it more palatable too and helps with absorption. Also, I just got some results back from my last checkup, and while everything looks fine, my doctor didn’t mention shatavari at all! Should I be concerned about that? I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right for my baby and myself. Any advice would be much appreciated!! Thanks, everyone!

Doctors' responses

Taking shatavari powder during pregnancy is indeed a topic filled with much interest and caution. Traditional Ayurvedic practice has used shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) as a nourishing tonic for women, especially during pregnancy, due to its purported ability to support hormonal balance and overall health. However, it’s always prudent to proceed with caution and consult your healthcare provider before adding any supplement to your diet.

Regarding how to take shatavari, in Ayurveda, it is often recommended to consume it with milk, as milk acts as an excellent anupana (vehicle) that complements its nourishing properties. You could try mixing about 1/2 teaspoon of shatavari powder with a glass of warm milk, ideally consumed in the morning or evening. If milk does not suit your diet, almond or coconut milk are alternatives.

Mixing shatavari with honey can also make it easier to consume and slightly improve taste. While some prefer it in smoothies, ensure the other ingredients align with a pregnancy-friendly diet. A small amount like 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon is usually sufficient, but individual needs can vary, so listen to your body and adjust accordingly. Dosage matters greatly, and exceeding 1 teaspoon daily without professional guidance could bring undesired effects.

Your healthcare provider might not have mentioned shatavari because it’s more commonly known within the realm of Ayurveda rather than conventional Western medicine. Doctors typically prioritize mainstream treatments unless they’re familiar with or supportive of alternative remedies. Always consult your doctor, especially if they are open to integrative medicine, regarding incorporating shatavari or other Ayurvedic supplements into your routine.

Remember to trust your body’s response, and prioritize safety and professional guidance. During pregnancy, it’s crucial to balance benefits against any potential risks. Stay informed, and don’t hesitate to reach out to a certified Ayurvedic practitioner or your doctor with specific concerns you might have as they apply to your individual health context.
