Doctors' responses

To address hair fall, thinning and breakage using Ayurveda, it’s important to consider both internal and external treatments. Start by analyzing your diet, as nutrition plays a crucial role in hair health. Incorporate foods rich in vitamins and minerals such as Amla (Indian gooseberry) and sesame seeds. Amla is fantastic for nourishing hair, supports the health of hair follicles and promotes growth. You can consume fresh amla or its juice daily.

Similarly, you can include black sesame seeds and almonds in your diet. They are rich in nutrients necessary for hair growth and can be consumed as snacks, or added to your breakfast smoothies.

Externally, regular scalp massage with oil can significantly benefit hair. Use a blend of coconut oil with few drops of rosemary or lavender essential oil for nourishing hair roots and improving circulation. Massage gently on the scalp for about 15-20 minutes., at least twice a week before washing your hair.

For herbal treatments, make a paste of hibiscus leaves and flowers. Apply it to your scalp for about 30 minutes before washing. This is known to strengthen the hair shafts and improve texture. Also, you can use an Ayurvedic hair mask made from fenugreek seeds. Soak a handful of seeds overnight, grind them into a paste and apply on your scalp for about 30 minutes.

Ayurvedic texts emphasize balancing the ‘Pitta’ dosha, which if imbalanced can lead to hair problems. To pacify Pitta, avoid spicy, overly salty or sour foods. Consume cooling foods like cucumbers, watermelons and leafy greens. Practice yoga and meditation to manage stress levels, as stress is a known trigger for hair loss.

Make sure to avoid harsh chemical treatments and excessive hairstyling products that can exacerbate hair damage. Regularly trim your hair to rid off split ends, helping maintain healthy growth. If hair fall persists or is severe, it might be worth consulting a Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized assessment.

Hair fall and thinning can emerge from various root causes like imbalances in dosha, stress, poor diet, or improper hair care routines. To address these concerns, here’s how you can take practical Siddha-Ayurvedic steps to promote healthy hair growth.

Firstly, assess your diet. A sattvic diet with nutrient-rich foods supports your body’s agni (digestive fire), which is crucial for nourishing sapta dhatus (seven body tissues), including hair. Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, good fats like ghee, nuts, and seeds. Chia seeds or sabja seeds can be beneficial due to their Omega-3 fatty acids content; consuming them can promote healthy scalp. Mix them with milk or water and consume it in moderation.

Consider your dosha type. If you have a Vata imbalance, which is often linked to dryness and hair breakage, increase hydration and strive for a routine that includes warm oil massages. Taila (oil) massages with bhringraj or coconut oil three times a week can improve circulation and nourish hair roots.

For Pitta imbalance, which may manifest as inflammation or premature greying, calming teas like chamomile or mint and cooling food could balance Pitta. Reduce heat-stimulating foods like chili and alcohol.

Now hygiene plays a role too, so make sure not to overwash hair; twice a week is adequate with a mild herbal shampoo, preferably with ingredients like shikakai or reetha. Reduce chemical-laden hair products as they can disrupt scalp health.

Lastly, practice stress-relieving activities like pranayama or yoga—as mental stress can aggravate dosha imbalance leading to hair problems. Regularly assess your condition; if hair loss continues or worsens, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner for customized remedies is advisable.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
