Doctors’ responses
Continuous nighttime coughing can be disruptive and may point to an imbalance in the Kapha and Vata doshas, which are often associated with respiratory issues in Ayurveda. This kind of cough can be aggravated by factors such as cold, dryness, allergens, or irritants, leading to congestion and a dry or scratchy throat. To address this condition, Ayurveda focuses on herbal remedies, dietary modifications, and lifestyle adjustments to soothe the respiratory tract and reduce coughing.
For immediate relief, try a warm mixture of tulsi (holy basil) tea with honey and a pinch of pippali (long pepper) before bedtime, which can help soothe the throat and clear mucus. Licorice root tea or powder is also beneficial for reducing irritation and has a naturally sweet taste that coats the throat. Another remedy is to take Trikatu churna (a blend of black pepper, ginger, and long pepper) with honey, as this can aid in clearing mucus and balancing Kapha without causing dryness.
Steam inhalation with a few drops of eucalyptus oil or tulsi leaves can help open up nasal passages and ease the cough reflex. Avoid cold foods and drinks, especially in the evening, as these can increase Kapha and aggravate cough. Instead, opt for warm, nourishing soups, spices like ginger and turmeric, and avoid heavy, oily foods that can contribute to mucus buildup.
Establishing a bedtime routine with nasya (applying a few drops of warm sesame oil or Anu taila in the nostrils) can help soothe the respiratory tract and reduce nighttime cough. Additionally, practicing Pranayama techniques like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) during the day can support lung health and reduce cough reflex sensitivity.

Oh wow, that sounds pretty uncomfortable. Night-time coughing can definitely disrupt sleep and just make you feel lousy, right? It's usually could be a sign that something's not quite balanced. In Ayurveda, we often look at underlying imbalances, and for coughs, we think about dosha implications - primarily Kapha and Vata.
Vata imbalance can cause dryness — leading to a dry cough, or cough that make your throat feel scratchy. On the other hand, excess Kapha can lead to a productive or phlegmy type of cough... You might wanna consider what kind of cough you have, cuz the treatment differs.
Firstly, let’s talk about your evening routine. You might wanna try avoiding cold drinks or foods, especially in the evening hours. Opt for warm liquids, maybe herbal teas? Like tulsi (holy basil) or ginger tea. Both are excellent and soothing, so aim for sipping say, a couple hours before bed.
Do you have honey at home? If it's the dry cough variety you're dealing with, a spoon of honey before sleep could help where taking control over that tickle. Just make sure you don’t have any honey allergies or anything.
For a Kapha-type cough, steaming can work magic. It's really about loosening things up. You can do a simple steam inhalation with a few drops of eucalyptus oil in hot water. Couple of minutes in the evening, try that after dinner maybe?
Also, pay attention to evening meals — balance is key. Heavy, oily, or sour foods can intensify the issue. Light, warm meals are generally easier to digest and don’t aggravate Kapha as much.
And if you think this issue is persisting, or if you've got any other serious symptoms, don't wait. It’s best to consult a healthcare professional. Sometimes, underlying issues need more attention than we think. Your health is valuable; don't hesitate to get the support you need.
