Intertrigo - #17666

Anonymously

For the past few weeks, I’ve been dealing with persistent redness, itching, and irritation in the folds of my skin, especially in areas like my underarms and below my belly. At first, I thought it was just sweat irritation, but it’s been getting worse, and sometimes the skin even feels raw and painful. When I looked it up, I found out that this condition is called intertrigo—a type of inflammation that occurs in warm, moist areas where skin rubs together. I read that intertrigo is caused by friction, trapped moisture, and sometimes a fungal or bacterial infection. Since I sweat a lot, especially in humid weather, I wonder if that’s making it worse. Now I’m curious—does Ayurveda have any natural remedies to help soothe intertrigo and prevent it from coming back? Are there cooling Ayurvedic herbs or treatments that can help in reducing the irritation and keeping the skin dry? I’ve heard that Neem and Aloe Vera are great for skin infections—could they help in healing the affected areas? Another thing I’m wondering about is whether my diet could be making my intertrigo worse. I’ve read that excessive heat in the body (Pitta imbalance) can cause skin inflammation, so should I be avoiding spicy, oily, or processed foods? Does Ayurveda recommend specific foods or herbal teas that help in balancing Pitta and reducing skin irritation? Would including more cooling foods like cucumbers, coconut water, and fresh greens help in preventing intertrigo? I also want to understand if my daily habits are contributing to intertrigo. I usually wear tight clothes, and I don’t always dry off properly after showering—could that be making the problem worse? Does Ayurveda suggest any lifestyle changes, such as wearing loose cotton clothing or using herbal powders to absorb excess moisture and prevent skin rubbing? Would Ayurvedic oils or medicated pastes help in protecting the skin from further irritation? If anyone has experience managing intertrigo using Ayurveda, I’d love to hear what worked for you. Did herbal treatments, dietary changes, or external applications help? How long did it take to see improvements? I really want to find a natural way to heal my skin and prevent this from happening again, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ayurveda views intertrigo as a Pitta-Kapha imbalance, aggravated by heat, moisture, and friction. Cooling herbs like Neem, Aloe Vera, and Sandalwood can help soothe inflammation, while antifungal remedies like turmeric and Triphala can prevent infections. Applying a paste of Neem and Aloe Vera or using medicated powders like Yashtimadhu (licorice) or Chandana (sandalwood) can keep the skin dry and reduce irritation. Dietary adjustments, such as avoiding spicy, oily, and processed foods while incorporating cooling foods like cucumbers, coconut water, and fresh greens, can help balance Pitta. Lifestyle changes like wearing loose cotton clothing, keeping the affected areas dry, and using herbal dusting powders like Kapur (camphor) or talc-free sandalwood powder can prevent recurrence. Practicing good hygiene, drying off properly after showering, and using gentle Ayurvedic oils like coconut or Karanja oil can provide protection. If symptoms persist, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized treatment may be beneficial.
