Doctors’ responses
Avoid oily, spicy and processed foods. Regular exercise and meditation. Increase intake of raw vegetables and fruits. Sy. Evecare 15ml twice a day Tab. Shatavari 2-0-2 Tab. Myron 2-0-2 Follow up after 4weeks
At age 45, this is likely part of the perimenopausal phase (hormonal fluctuations before menopause). Frequent bleeding + prolonged brown discharge may indicate: Rajahpradara (menorrhagia/metrorrhagia in Ayurveda) Possible endometrial thickening / fibroid / polyp Hormonal imbalance (estrogen-progesterone shifts in perimenopause)
Since you are having prolonged discharge with high BP, it’s very important to rule out structural causes first. Recommended Investigations Pelvic Ultrasound (USG abdomen + pelvis, TVS if possible) → to check for fibroid, polyp, endometrial thickness. CBC, Hb% → to see if anemia is developing. Thyroid profile (TSH, T3, T4) → thyroid dysfunction can also cause such bleeding. BP monitoring regularly. Ayurvedic Supportive Approach
Ashokarishta – 20 ml with equal water, after meals, twice daily. Pradarantak Lauh – 1 tab twice daily with honey. Lodhra + Musta + Ashoka (churna mix) – 1 tsp twice daily with rice wash water or lukewarm water. Kumaryasava – 20 ml with water, twice daily. Shatavari powder – 1 tsp with warm milk at night.
HELLO ARWA,
At age 45, you are in the stage called perimenopause- the years before menopause when periods become irregular due to changes in hormones (mainly estrogen and progesterone)
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR CASE -Normally , the menstrual cycle is ~ 28-30 days, bleeding lasts 3-5 days, and then it stops completely until the next cycle
In your case -cycle is becoming short (every 15-20 days) -you bleed for 3 days, but instead of stopping completely, you continue to have brown discharge for 10-13 more days -brown discharge = old, stagnant blood that is not expelled properly
This means your uterus is not cleaning itself completely and blood remains inside, coming out slowly as brown discharge
POSSBILE CAUSES -Hormonal imbalance (perimenopause, thyroid changes, insulin resistance, obesity etc -Uterine conditions: fibroid, endometrial polyp, adenomyosis -Thickening of uterine lining -less common but important : precancerous or cancerous changes in the uterus/ cervix at this age
In Ayurveda, your symptoms are described as Rakta pradara (excessive or irregular bleeding/discharge due to pitta and vata imbalance -Pitta= heat in the body-> causes more bleeding, burning, early cycles -Vata= dryness/irregularity-> causes incomplete expulsion, leading to spotting and brown discharge
So, the goal is to -balance pitta= reduce excess heat, bleeding, and inflammation -balance vata= ensure proper expulsion of menstrual blood, regulate cycle -strengthen uterus-> tone the endometrium so bleeding starts and stops properly -support hormonal balance-> calm fluctuations in perimenopause
INTERNAL MANAGEMENT
1) ASHOKRISHTA = 20 ml + equal water twice daily after meals =strengthen uterine muscles, reduces bleeding, regulates cycle
2) KUMARYASAVA= 15 ml + equal water twice daily after meals =balances hormones, improves digestion and liver function (important for hormones)
3) PRAVAL PISHTI= 250mg twice daily with ghee after meals =cooling, reduces excess pitta, controls heavy/irregular bleeding
4) KAMDUDHA RAS (with mukta)= 125mg twice daily with water =balances acidity, pitta, calms body heat, useful in spotting
5) LODHRA CHURNA= 2gm with honey twice daily after meals =astringnt herb, tones uterus, stops excess discharge
6) TRIPHALA CHURNA= 1 tsp at bedtime with warm water =detoxifies, improves digestion, prevents constipation
duration= usually 2-3 months
DIET -prefer cooling, stack diet -milk, ghee, rice, moong dal, pomegranate, apples, grapes, dates -green leafy vegetables - spinach, drumstick leaves, methi -seeds= flaxseeds, sesame (black), pumpkin seeds (natural hormone balancers) -Spices in moderation:- cumin, coriander, fennel(all balance pitta)
AVOID -spicy, sour, fried, junk food -red meat, alcohol, excessive tea/coffee -packaged/processed foods
LIFESTYLE -maintain regular sleep routine (10-11pm bedtime) -avoid overexertion, fasting, skipping meals -gentle exercise only-> walking, ygoa -manage stress-> as stress worsens hormonal imbalance
YOGA ASANAS -baddhakonasana= improves pelvic circulation -setu bandhasana= tones uterus -supta baddhakonasana= relaxes uterus -viparita karani= calms pitta and vata
PRANAYAM -Anulom vilom= balances hormones -Sheetali and sheetkari= cooling, reduces pitta -Bhramari= calms mind, reduces stress
HOME REMEDIES -Cumin-coriander-fennel water= drink lukewarm in morning -Pomegranate juice= 1/2 glass daily- natural astringent, reduces spotting -Banana flower curry (with moong dal)- traditional remedy for excessive bleeding -Aloe vera pulp- fresh 1 tsp with honey daily- balances hormones
INVESTIGATIONS NEEDED
1) Pelvic ultrasound-> to check uterus (fibroid, endometrium thickness , polyp) 2)CBC 3) THYROID PROFILE 4) PAP SMERA
-Your symptoms are common in perimenopause, but at age 45 we must not ignore them. -Investigations will ensure there is no serious cause -with consistent care 2-3 months , your periods can become lighter, shorter, and more regular and you can move smoothly toward menopause

The symptoms you’re experiencing could be part of a perimenopausal transition, a time when irregular cycles and bleeding are quite common due to hormonal changes. Given your age, it’s crucial to consider these hormonal shifts. However, any persistent or unusual bleeding pattern warrants a deeper investigation to rule out other potential issues like fibroids, polyps, or even hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance or low progesterone levels.
From an Ayurvedic viewpoint, such irregular bleeding can be linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha. This dosha governs hormones and blood, and when aggravated, it may cause excess heat and issues in the reproductive system. Here are some steps you might consider, but remember, continuous symptoms like this should be assessed by a healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
1. Dietary Adjustments: Aim to reduce Pitta-aggravating foods - avoid spicy, oily, and sour foods. Instead, incorporate more cooling, sweet, and astringent foods like cucumber, watermelon, and leafy greens.
2. Herbal Support: Shatavari, a well-respected herb in Ayurveda, is known to support women’s health and balance hormones. You might consider taking Shatavari in powder form, about 1 teaspoon mixed with warm water or milk, once or twice daily.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Stress management is crucial. Practices like Yoga and meditation can help soothe the mind and stabilize hormones. Consistent routine around sleeping and eating can also support body balance.
4. Cooling Therapies: Applying aloe vera gel on the lower abdomen or drinking aloe vera juice can provide cooling relief and help regulate your cycle.
5. Regular Exercise: Engage in moderate physical activity like walking or swimming to maintain a healthy weight and improve overall vitality.
Always consider visiting a qualified healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation, especially if your symptoms do not improve or worsen. Balancing your body can involve complex interactions, and professional guidance can ensure safety and efficacy in managing these symptoms.
