Managing Anxiety and Digestive Issues at 51 - #37379
Hello, I'm 51 and have a mixture of symptoms. Some I've had for about 25 years with increasing severity: migraines and tensi headaches about 2-8 a month and anxiety almost daily I also have suffered from acid reflux and bile reflux (duodenum sphincter not closing) for about 4 years. I'm addition I've got more recent perimenopausal symptoms such as joint pain, waking up at 3 am and not being able to sleep again due to anxiety. I had a few hot flushes at the end of August but they also stopped. I also had tingling and pain in my hands, lower arms and feet for about 3 months. This has disappeared again since about 2 months. I also have this ongoing pain behind my right eye. I've seenan ayurvedic practitioner who prescribed a vata diet and vata pacifying practices such as nadishodana. I've been taking ashwaganda and brahmi 2x 1000mg each, morning and evening. Since including brahmi I felt lots better. But I've started to experience worse bile reflux and acid reflux with pains in my stomach. SoI can't continue with the herbs. The practitioner I saw is on holiday. Do you have any recommendations what I could take instead? My main issue is the anxiety. As when this is in check I feel much better overall.

Given the mix of symptoms, addressing anxiety first seems crucial as it can exacerbate other symptoms. It’s important to look at the underlying dosha imbalances, primarily Vata and Pitta in your case. Your symptoms such as anxiety, headaches, and insomnia indicate a Vata imbalance, while acid reflux and bile reflux suggest a Pitta imbalance.
Ashwagandha and Brahmi are generally safe for reducing Vata-related anxiety, but your experience suggests that they may be aggravating your reflux, as they can be a bit warming in nature. Since your practitioner is unavailable, here’s what you could consider until you can consult with them again:
1. Diet Adjustments: - For both Vata and Pitta, a diet that is cooling, calming, and nourishing is beneficial. Include foods like cooked vegetables (sweet potatoes, squash), whole grains like basmati rice, and cooling herbs like coriander and fennel. - Avoid spicy, oily, or very sour foods that can aggravate both Vata and Pitta.
2. Herbal Alternatives: - Shatavari: Known for its cooling and nurturing properties, shatavari is beneficial for easing anxiety and tension without aggravating Pitta dosha. Take 500mg twice a day, with a small amount of warm milk or water. - Guduchi is another cooling herb that can be supportive for both anxiety and digestive issues. Similar dosage, 500mg twice a day.
3. Lifestyle Practices: - Pranayama can be very useful for your symptoms. In addition to Nadi Shodhana, try Shitali or Sheetkari for its cooling effects, 5-10 minutes daily. - Regular Abhyanga (oil massage) with sesame oil or a blend specifically formulated for pacifying both Vata and Pitta. Do this in the early evening to help calm your nervous system.
4. Sleep and Stress Management: - Establish a consistent bedtime routine, leveraging warm baths or meditation before bed. Consider a gentle herbal tea with chamomile or fennel before sleeping. - Journaling can often help release pent-up stress or thoughts before bedtime.
5. Consult a Professional: Given the complexity of your symptoms, follow up with your practitioner when they return, especially if the reflux persists or other symptoms return. If acid reflux becomes severe or pain escalates, seek immediate medical evaluation as ignoring such symptoms could lead to more serious conditions.
Make these changes one at a time, noting any changes or reactions. This personalized approach should address your immediate anxiety while minimizing reflux issues. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your regimen, especially if symptoms persist or worsen.
