does amla cause cough - #37707
I am a little confused and honestly kinda worried about something! Recently, I started taking amla supplements because my friend swears by their benefits for overall health. I was feeling a bit under the weather with a sore throat, and I thought the amla would help, right? But then all of a sudden I started coughing more than usual, and I can’t help but wonder — does amla cause cough? I mean, I thought it was supposed to be good for me, but I can't tell if it’s part of the healing process or if it’s actually creating a problem. I feel like I read somewhere that some people have a reaction to it, but then again, everyone is different. My throat feels scratchy sometimes and I've got this irritating cough that just won’t quit. Last night I even got up and looked through the internet and found mixed stuff about cough and amla. Some say it helps, some say it can cause irritation. Like, am I supposed to stop taking it? Would that make my immune system weak? If anyone out there has experienced this or knows, please help, because I'm starting to stress out about it. Does amla cause cough? Should I just tough it out??

Doctors' responses
The effects of amla (Emblica officinalis) on health can vary based on individual constitution, known as prakriti in Ayurveda. While amla is generally venerated for its immunity-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties, it’s crucial to consider your specific balance of doshas, especially if unexpected reactions arise.
Amla is classified as having a sour taste (amla rasa) which could exacerbate certain imbalances. If you naturally have a Vata or Pitta dominant constitution, the sourness might aggravate those doshas, leading to symptoms like a scratchy throat or cough. Also, sometimes amla’s high vitamin C content can temporarily intensify certain conditions while invigorating your immune response — but its not common to directly cause a cough.
Considering your situation, it’s important to monitor how your body reacts. If the cough worsens and the sore throat persist after taking amla, it might be helpful to stop temporarily and observe if there’s an improvement. To address your current symptoms, you could follow some Ayurvedic practices which help in soothing throat irritation:
1. Warm herbal teas, made from licorice root or ginger, can have a soothing effect on the throat. These should be sipped slowly, preferably a few times a day. 2. Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce throat irritation and clear mucus. 3. Honey mixed with turmeric is also known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing effects. Take small amounts to ease a cough.
In general, it’s always a good idea to view any supplement like amla within the context of your unique constitution and current health status. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner or a healthcare provider would be wise. And remember, if you suspect any severe reactions, it’s crucial to seek professional medical attention promptly.
