how to treat high bilirubin in adults - #38449

Hunter

I am really worried because my husband just got some blood test results back and it showed that his bilirubin levels are really high – like, way higher than normal! He’s been feeling kind of off lately, with fatigue and a bit of yellowing in his eyes, which freaks me out, you know? We thought it was just from lack of sleep or something, but now I wonder if this high bilirubin is causing it. He’s also had some abdominal discomfort, like pain on the right side, and it just doesn’t sit right with me. We haven't really looked into it much until now, but I’m curious about how to treat high bilirubin in adults, especially in a natural way. I’ve read all kinds of things online, from dietary changes to herbal remedies, but it all feels overwhelming. It’s like there's too much info, and I can't tell what is legit or helpful. Are there specific foods we should be looking at? Or maybe certain herbs? What actually works for how to treat high bilirubin in adults, and is there something we can try at home while we wait for the doc’s appointment? Also, would lifestyle changes really make a difference? I would really love any guidance from the group. Thanks!

Certainly, addressing high bilirubin levels involves understanding the root causes that Ayurveda emphasizes. It’s crucial to consider that your husband’s symptoms could stem from underlying liver or gallbladder issues, given his fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal pain. While awaiting further medical advice, you can try some Ayurvedic approaches that focus on balancing the doshas, supporting liver function, and improving digestion.

First, dietary modifications can play a significant role. Incorporate foods that are easy to digest and support liver health, such as cooked vegetables like squashes, carrots, and leafy greens. These should be lightly spiced with turmeric and coriander to enhance digestion and detoxification. Limit or avoid fatty, fried, and processed foods as they can burden the liver. Proper hydration is also important, so ensure he drinks enough warm water throughout the day.

Herbs renowned in Ayurveda for supporting liver function include Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa). These herbs can help reduce bilirubin levels and alleviate symptoms. However, consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider before starting any herbal regimen, to ensure it aligns with your husband’s specific condition and other medications he might be taking.

Lifestyle changes, indeed, can make a substantial impact. Encourage gentle exercises like walking or yoga, which aid circulation and digestion. Adequate sleep and stress management are equally important; practices like deep breathing exercises and meditation can help maintain the balance of Vata and Pitta doshas, often implicated in liver imbalances.

Finally, ensure liver-friendly habits: Avoid alcohol as it can exacerbate liver stress and cut down on high-sugar or overly-processed foods. Small changes in daily routines, like following regular meal times and avoiding late-night eating, support liver health. If symptoms persist or worsen, though, prioritize follow-up with your healthcare provider to rule out more serious conditions that may require immediate attention.
