what is symptoms of dengue - #39203

Matthew

I am really confused and a bit freaked out right now. Last week, I got this sudden high fever, and I thought it was just a regular flu or something. But then I started feeling really weak and tired, like I couldn’t even get outta bed! I also had this awful headache and my joints hurt so bad. It felt like, I dunno, my whole body was aching. Then, I noticed some weird rashes popping up, like little red spots all over my arms and legs. I’m just wondering, what is symptoms of dengue? I’ve read a bit online and saw things like severe headache, pain behind the eyes, and rashes which basically matches what I’m feeling. I went to the doctor, and they took some blood tests, but it’s taking forever to get results! Ugh, the waiting is driving me crazy!!! Now I’m worried, like, what if this is dengue? I live in an area where mosquitoes are bad, but I didn’t think much of it until now. I’ve been drinking fluids and chilling out, but I want to know if I should be looking for other signs or anything? Like, what is symptoms of dengue that I should definitely watch out for? I just want this yucky feeling to go away!

Doctors' responses

Dengue symptoms can often start with a sudden high fever, it’s quite common for individuals to experience abrupt temperature spikes. Alongside this, you’ll notice that severe headache, which you mentioned, can make things quite uncomfortable. Pain behind the eyes is another telltale sign, often feeling intense and deep. Joint and muscle pain are typical, which tends to contribute to that overall feeling of body ache you described — hence the nicknames “breakbone fever,” due to the severity of the discomfort.

Fatigue and exhaustion are prevalent in dengue infections, and sometimes they are mistaken for severe tiredness associated with common viral infections. Regarding the skin, the rash may appear after the fever subsides, showing up as red spots or patches — often seen on the legs and arms, as you’ve observed. While these are common symptoms, in some instances, individuals might experience vomiting or nausea, adding to general unease.

While you wait for test results, continue your good practices of staying hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, coconut water, or herbal teas, which help maintain electrolyte levels. But, it’s crucial to understand that if symptoms like severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from gums or nose, or significant changes in behavior emerge, seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of more severe dengue types like dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.

Balance is essential. Maintain moderate room temperature and avoid sudden temperature changes which may stress your body further. As for diet, light meals that do not strain your digestion would be ideal; consider soups or broths to support your body. Remember, while these suggestions can aid support general well-being, they should not substitute professional medical advice or workarounds the hospital’s guidance being awaited.
