can we eat curd with banana - #41450

Chloe

I am really curious about whether can we eat curd with banana together? I've been dealing with some digestive issues lately. Like, sometimes I just feel bloated after meals. A friend suggested that certain food combinations could be messing with my stomach. I tend to love having curd, almost every day — it’s like a staple for me. And on the other hand, bananas are my go-to snack when I’m hungry... or just craving something sweet. But I remember my grandma saying once that mixing foods like curd and banana might not be the best idea. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but now I'm wondering if she was onto something. I usually have a bowl of curd with fruits for breakfast, and bananas often sneak in there! I really don’t want to create more problems for my tummy, ya know? I mean, I can’t figure out if it’s the curd or some other foods causing the bloating. Can I keep enjoying this combo or should I really stay away from it? I read different things online, some say it’s fine and some say totally avoid it! What’s the real deal? Any advice would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Combining curd with banana might seem harmless, but from ayurvedic perspective, it’s generally not recommended. This pairing can create an imbalance in your doshas, especially if you’re experiencing digestive issues like bloating. Ayurveda suggests that certain food combinations disrupt agni, the digestive fire, leading to indigestion and other digestive discomforts.

According to Ayurveda, curd is heavy and cooling, whereas bananas are sweet and also cooling. Consuming these together might further slow down digestion, potentially aggravating kapha and causing digestive issues like bloating, gas, or even ama (toxins) accumulation. This could be particularly relevant for you since you’ve been experiencing such symptoms lately.

If you’re really fond of both curd and bananas, try having them separately to see if there’s any improvement in your digestion. Have curd with other easily digestible fruits like pomegranate or papaya, which are more compatible from an ayurvedic standpoint. Alternatively, you can enjoy bananas on their own as a mid-morning or afternoon snack, keeping a gap of at least 2-3 hours between having curd and banana.

Really be observant of how your body responds to different food combinations. Keeping a food diary might prove helpful in identifying specific foods or combinations that trigger bloating or discomfort. It’s crucial to pay attention to not just what you eat but also how you eat. Eating mindfully, chewing thoroughly, and not rushing through meals can also support better digestion.

If you continue to experience bloating or digestive distress despite adjusting your diet, consulting with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner for a more tailored approach will be beneficial. They can assess your dosha balance, digestive strength, and help create a personalized dietary plan to support your digestive health.
