what is asava and arishta - #43512

Stella

I am feeling really confused about this whole thing with asava and arishta. So, a few weeks ago, my friend mentioned she was taking something for her digestion, and she said it was an asava. I thought, okay, cool, but then I started looking into it and there’s like a ton of info but also a lot of jargon that’s hard to follow. Like, what is asava and arishta even? I hear people say they’re similar but also different?? Last month, I tried looking for some natural remedies for my bloating and kinda got lost in all the different products out there. Some places claim asava is used for boosting immunity too, while others focus on arishta for liver health. My brain literally started spinning!! 😅 If I'm dealing with digestive issues, should I try one or the other? Or maybe both? What is asava and arishta in simple terms? Also, I read somewhere that the fermentation process makes them potent, but I’m not sure how that works. Do they taste bad? I really need something I can handle. I’m just trying to figure out what’s best for me without getting lost in all the details. Any help would be super appreciated! Thanks!

Asava and Arishta are actually similar but have few distinctions which are useful to understand, especially when dealing with digestive issues. Both are types of fermented Ayurvedic liquid preparations used for health benefits. The primary difference lies in their preparation process. Asavas are fermented using fresh herbal juices without boiling, whereas Arishtas involve fermentation using decoctions where the herbs are boiled.

Fermentation is key because it enhances the properties of the herbs, making them more easily absorbed by the body. This process also contributes to the potency and effectiveness of these preparations, aiding digestion, improving metabolism, and promoting overall health. Some people might find the taste somewhat strong or unusual due to the presence of alcohol (a natural byproduct of fermentation), but it’s generally manageable for most.

For issues like bloating, an Arishta such as Dashmoolarishta or an Asava like Kumaryasava could be beneficial due to their carminative properties, meaning they help relieve gas and bloating. However, choosing between Asava and Arishta often depends on your specific symptoms and constitution.

If bloating is primarily due to sluggish digestion, consider starting with Asava options like Kumaryasava. It’s known for assisting in digestion and detoxifying the body. You can take about 15-30 ml with an equal amount of water after meals. If symptoms persist or are rooted in stress, then Arishta such as Draksharishta, known for calming effects, might be an option.

Remember, these preparations are not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s always recommended to start with a small amount to see how your body reacts. Consult with a skilled Ayurvedic practitioner to find the most suitable option tailored to your doshic balance and health needs, especially if you’re dealing with chronic issues. And please, don’t replace urgent medical care with these treatments if you experience any severe or persistent symptoms.
