When it comes to stubborn bad breath, or halitosis, the root cause often ties back to digestive issues and not just oral hygiene. In Ayurveda, this is seen as an imbalance in the digestive fire or ‘Agni’, possibly aggravated by Ama (toxins). Here’s how you can address the issue:
Start focusing on enhancing your digestive fire. Include lukewarm water with lemon in the mourning. This aids digestion and acts as detoxifier. Before meals, you might sip a small cup of ginger tea; simply steep a few slices of fresh ginger in hot water. This enhances Agni.
Your diet’s also important in removing toxins. Increase your intake of fiber-rich vegetables like carrots, celery, and leafy greens. Cut down on processed foods, sugar, and dairy that can create mucus and promote toxin formation. Ayurveda recommends a mainly vegetarian diet, including whole grains like quinoa and amaranth which are gentle on digestion.
A herbal remedy such as triphala can support digestion and cleanse the system. Take 1 teaspoon of triphala powder with warm water before bed, it gently scrubs the intestines and balances all three doshas. Another potent digestion-boosting formula is Hingvastak churna. Consume half a teaspoon mixed with a little bit of ghee before meals to stimulate digestive enzymes.
Consciously chew your food well and avoid drinking cold drinks during meals as it hampers digestion. Maintain a consistent eating schedule to train your digestive system to produce enzymes at the right times. Practice some yoga postures like Pawanmuktasan and Vajrasan, which help improve digestion and regulate metabolism.
For oral care, try oil-pulling with sesame oil in the morning for around 5 minutes, followed by tongue scraping. Clove or cardamom can be sucked on gently for a temporary relief and fresh breath.
Persistent problems may need personalized approach, and if symptoms continue to impact your daily life, don’t hesitate to seek professional consultation. Addressing stress through techniques like meditation can also unexpectedly yield improvement as stress can impair digestion. Prioritize balance through regular routine and lifestyle adjustments compliant with your constitution, ensuring holistic healing.
