For your mother’s condition, integrating Ayurvedic principles may support her current treatment. Osteoporosis and the issues with her back point towards a Vata imbalance, contributing to weakened bone tissues (asthi dhatu) and pain. Addressing this requires a multi-pronged approach including diet, lifestyle, and treatments that pacify Vata.

Dietary Adjustments: Consider enhancing your mother’s diet to support bone health. Warm, nourishing foods can help balance Vata. Encourage her to consume foods like flaxseeds, sesame seeds, and almonds, which are rich in calcium and promote bone health. Incorporate cooked vegetables; root vegetables like carrots and beetroots are soothing. Milk boiled with a little turmeric or ginger can be nourishing if she tolerates dairy. Avoid cold, dry foods, and raw vegetables which can aggravate Vata.

Herbal Remedies: Ashwagandha and Shatavari are potent herbs that help strengthen bones and muscles. Ashwagandha powder (churna) can be taken with warm milk or water, about 1/2 teaspoon, twice a day. Saraswata churna, which contains beneficial herbs, may help with nerve support when taken in small amounts as directed by an Ayurvedic practitioner.

Lifestyle Recommendations: Gentle exercises, like yoga tailored for osteoporosis and spinal support, can aid in pain management and improve mobility. Focus on suppleness and strength through postures like Marjaryasana (Cat Pose) and Bitilasana (Cow Pose), but ensure these are done under guidance to avoid strain.

Pain Management: Warm oil massages using Mahanarayana Taila or Dhanwantaram Taila can alleviate Vata-related pain. Regular abhyanga (oil massage) is beneficial. Apply with gentle strokes on the back, letting the oil absorb for about 30 minutes before a warm bath.

Always consult an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any new treatments, especially since her condition involves severe pain and potentially critical medical issues. Ensure ongoing communication with her orthopedic doctor to align all treatments effectively.

In addressing osteoporosis and herniated disks through Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, it’s essential to maintain a balanced approach targeting the underlying dosha imbalances. Osteoporosis generally indicates vata imbalance, impacting the asthi dhatu, or bone tissue. Begin by incorporating sesame oil self-massage (abhyanga) daily, which can help alleviate vata and nourish the bones.

For internal support, consider using ashwagandha and shatavari to strengthen the bones and tissues; these can be taken as powders, with warm milk, once or twice daily. It’s crucial to ensure she maintains a diet rich in calcium—a combination of mung beans, green leafy vegetables, and almonds soaked overnight may be beneficial.

Since the lower back pain is due to disk issues, localized treatments like applying warm sesame oil mixed with a pinch of turmeric can help reduce pain and inflammation. This should be applied gently to the affected area in the morning and evening. Techniques like ginger and garlic compresses could aid in relieving back pain; these should be applied warm for 15 to 20 minutes.

Encourage gentle yoga postures, like the cat-cow stretch and supported child’s pose, which can gradually improve her mobility, but always ensure comfort and avoid sharp pain. Adequate hydration and regular sunlight exposure are essential to enhance her digestion (agni) and bone health, as calcium absorption depends on digestive strength and vitamin D levels.

If the back pain persists or worsens, consult a healthcare professional for reevaluation. It is vital to continue monitoring her condition with the orthopedic doctor to ensure the treatments complement her ongoing medical care without compromising her immediate health needs. Adjustments must be done carefully, keeping her entire health context in mind.
