Ayurveda has shown impressive results in managing thyroid conditions. To begin with, it is essential to adopt a balanced lifestyle. Additionally, specific medications can help improve your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) by enhancing gastrointestinal (GIT) functions.

Before I provide you with the best recommendations, please share the following details:

2. Any history of surgery

Hello Yogi, In Ayurveda, thyroid imbalances are often linked to a disturbance in the Vata and Kapha doshas, leading to metabolic and hormonal disruptions. While Ayurvedic treatments may help support thyroid function by balancing these doshas, they cannot guarantee a permanent cure, especially if there’s an underlying autoimmune component, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. I recommend looking into herbal formulations like Ashwagandha, Guggulu, and Triphala, along with lifestyle changes to support overall health. Have you had any thyroid antibodies tested to check for autoimmune thyroiditis? Additionally, it’s important to consider your menstrual cycle, stress levels, and overall hormonal health, as these factors can affect your fertility. Have you discussed your thyroid health with a fertility specialist to understand its impact on baby planning?

Addressing thyroid issues, especially when reliant on medication like thyroxine, involves understanding both your current health and underlying causes. In Ayurveda, thyroid imbalances often relate to vata and kapha doshas. Balancing these may help, but it’s essential to work closely with your doctor, especially if meds increase over time.

The aim here isn’t just substituting medicine, but addressing the root cause. Start by assessing your diet, as it plays a critical role. Foods that pacify kapha, such as fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and spices like ginger and turmeric can be beneficial. Avoid processed foods, excessive salt, and heavy, oily meals that might aggravate kapha.

Regular yoga and breathing exercises, such as pranayama, can also help manage stress, one of the major factors contributing to hormone imbalance. Specific yoga postures like Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) or Matsyasana (fish pose) support thyroid function; however, practice with a qualified instructor to avoid strain.

Herbs like Ashwagandha and Shilajit are known to support thyroid health. These should be taken under an Ayurvedic practitioner’s guidance—dosage and preparation vary based on individual conditions.

As for baby planning, thyroid health can impact fertility, but it doesn’t inherently prevent pregnancy. Optimal thyroid function is important, so you should consult both your doctor and an ayurvedic practitioner to ensure your thyroid levels are under control before conceiving.

Consistency is key. Natural approaches may take time, but integrating them into daily life can improve overall thyroid health. Always ensure any ayurvedic regimen complements, not substitutes, your current medication—under professional supervision. Safety is paramount, so never cease medication without your doctor’s guidance.
