is custard powder good for health - #23296

Caroline

I am really curious about custard powder lately! I've been making desserts for my family, and sometimes I use custard powder for a quick fix. But I've had mixed feelings about its health benefits. Last week, my friend mentioned that custard powder isn’t really good for health because of added sugars or whatever, and I started to worry. It's easy to make, and my kids love it, but is custard powder good for health, like really? Should I be using it less or looking for alternatives? Do you think I can make healthier versions without sacrificing taste? Help!

Custard powder, which is often used for its convenience in making desserts, typically contains cornstarch as its main ingredient along with some flavoring and coloring agents. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the concern primarily lies in the ingredients that are not naturally present or may disrupt the equilibrium of doshas in the body. The main issue with custard powders is that they often include added sugars, artificial flavorings, and sometimes colorants—none of which contribute positively to one's health. Regular consumption of products with excessive refined sugar and artificial additives can indeed lead to imbalance in the body's doshas, particularly kapha dosha, contributing to sluggish metabolism and ama (toxins accumulation). A healthier alternative could be to prepare custard from scratch at home using natural ingredients. For instance, you can use organic milk or a plant-based milk (if vegan), and thicken it with arrowroot or tapioca starch, which are more easily digestible. Sweeten it with natural sweeteners such as jaggery or honey (added when cool), which according to Ayurveda, can be a better option compared to refined sugar, as it strengthens agni (digestive fire). Including saffron, cardamom, or even a touch of nutmeg can enhance the taste naturally while providing some health benefits unique to these spices. For example, cardamom can aid in digestion while saffron can bring a sense of calmness to the mind. Furthermore, serving the custard with fresh fruits not only reduces the need for additional sweeteners but also adds nutritional value. Choose fruits like bananas or berries, avoiding those that are known to aggravate kapha, like melons. Where possible, also consider the time and manner of consumption. Fresh desserts are generally best consumed during mid-day when the digestive fire is at its peak, which can also help in better digestion and assimilation of nutrients. While, moderation is key, particularly in the context of indulgent foods. In conclusion, while occasional use of custard powder isn't likely to pose a major health risk, opting for more natural alternatives can make your desserts healthier without sacrificing taste. This holistic approach aligns more closely with Ayurvedic principles, promoting balance and long-term health.
