is poha good for diabetes - #23479

Sofia

I am really curious about whether is poha good for diabetes? So here’s the deal — my dad was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and we’ve been trying to tweak his diet, you know? He loves his morning breakfast and I was thinking of making him poha since it’s light and, well, it’s pretty tasty too! But I’ve read mixed things online about carbohydrates and stuff that could spike blood sugar levels. Like, I made him some the other day with veggies and peanuts, but then I started worrying if is poha good for diabetes after seeing some articles saying it might not be the best choice for diabetic patients. He’s also been walking a lot more and that’s definitely helping, but food choices just feel so confusing. Can poha fit into a diabetic diet? Does the preparation matter or anything like that? Any tips or advice from people who’ve been through something similar would really help. Thanks a lot!

Poha can indeed be a part of a balanced diabetic diet, provided that some care is taken in its preparation and portioning. From an Ayurvedic perspective, poha primarily consists of flattened rice, which is light and easily digestible, making it suitable for individuals with compromised digestion or kapha imbalances, often observed in diabetes. Flattened rice in moderate amounts, especially when combined with proteins and fiber-rich foods, help in tempering its glycemic index.

To maximize the health benefits for your dad, you can include non-starchy vegetables like carrots, peas, and capsicum, which increase fiber content and slow down the release of sugars into the bloodstream. Also, adding protein-rich ingredients like peanuts or moong dal not only enhances the taste but also helps in maintaining sugar levels more consistently.

As for the preparation, it’s essential to keep oil usage minimal, opting for healthy options like mustard oil or ghee. These fats, in moderation, help in balancing vata, keeping the body’s energy and mood stabilized. You may choose cooking methods like steaming rather than frying to retain as many nutrients as possible.

Ensure to add spices such as turmeric and cumin which are beneficial in controlling blood sugar levels due to their anti-inflammatory properties. With respect to portion sizes, a controlled quantity, say one katori of poha with ample vegetables, would be ideal.

Remember, every individual may respond differently, so keeping track of how your dad’s body reacts to certain meal choices can help. Complementing meals with regular physical activities, just like the walking you mentioned, supports managing diabetes too.

It’s heartening your dad is already on the path to bettering his health. Even incorporating mindful eating, like not rushing through his meal, can bring about better digestive health supporting his diabetes management. Always consult with a healthcare provider before making significant dietary changes to ensure they align with your dad’s specific health needs.
