can we eat curd rice at night - #23932

Claire

I am really confused about my late-night eating habits lately. I’ve always loved curd rice, like seriously, it’s my comfort food! 😋 But I recently heard someone mention that it might not be the best idea to eat curd rice at night, and now I’m second-guessing myself. Here’s the thing: I usually work late and end up grabbing a bowl of curd rice around 10 PM before crashing on the couch. It’s quick and filling, and I don’t feel heavy afterwards. Yet, my friend was saying that eating curd rice at night might affect digestion and sleep. Why? I mean, it’s just rice and yogurt, right?! 🤷‍♀️ Last week, I felt a little bloated after having it for dinner, but I thought maybe it was just something I ate earlier. Still, I can’t shake off this worry now. Can we eat curd rice at night without any bad consequences? Should I be looking for an alternative at this time or is there a proper way to enjoy it after dark? Please help me out!

Curd rice is indeed a delightful comfort food for many, but there are a few considerations from an Ayurvedic perspective when it comes to eating it at night. According to Ayurveda, the key is understanding the qualities of the food and how it interacts with your body’s natural rhythms.

Curd (yogurt) is known for its cooling and heavy properties, which can affect digestion, particularly at night when our digestive fire, or agni, tends to be naturally lower. This could lead to the bloating you experienced. Additionally, an excess of kapha—a dosha characterized by qualities of heaviness, lethargy, and coldness—might be aggravated if curd is consumed late. This is especially relevant in the evening when kapha naturally begins to increase.

If you’re really fond of curd rice and wish to enjoy it at night, consider a few tweaks. Try using buttermilk instead of curd; it’s lighter and easier to digest which might help avoid the heaviness or bloating. You can also add spices such as cumin or ginger to help boost the digestive fire and mitigate kapha. They enhance the dish while supporting digestion.

Timing matters, too. Aiming to finish your evening meal around 8 PM could give your body more time to digest and process the food before you sleep. If 8 PM is too early due to your work schedule, have a lighter portion or supplement with warm, calming drinks like turmeric milk.

That said, everyone’s body is different, and individual constitution plays a critical role. If you’re still facing digestion issues, try rotating your dinner choices—explore lighter, warm meals occasionally and observe how you feel. This doesn’t mean abandoning curd rice altogether; just tailoring it to suit your unique body clock.

Remember, balance is key. If symptoms persist or you notice any significant discomfort, it’s prudent to seek further tailored advice, preferably from an Ayurvedic practitioner who can perform a detailed analysis of your dosha and prakriti.
