what will happen if we eat fish and curd together - #24382

Hudson

I am really curious and a bit worried about something that's been on my mind lately. I went out to lunch with some friends, and we had this amazing fish curry. But then, my friend mentioned how bad it could be to eat fish and curd together. Like, I’ve always loved that combo, but now I'm second guessing myself! What will happen if we eat fish and curd together? I even searched online and found all kind of opinions — some say it can upset your stomach while others act like it's a total myth. I've never had issues before, but last week after having fish with yogurt, I felt a little nauseous. Coincidence or not? I don't know. I really enjoy making fish dishes, but is it worth it if there could be a problem? Should I just steer clear of this combo, or is there any way to balance it out? Any thoughts or experiences would really help me clear this up!

In Ayurveda, the combination of fish and curd is generally considered as a "viruddha ahara," or incompatible food pairing. This ancient wisdom suggests that eating such combinations can disturb your digestive fire (agni), leading to indigestion, toxins (ama), and imbalance in your doshas, particularly Kapha and Pitta. The root cause here lies in the opposing qualities and energies these foods carry. Fish is heating in nature, while curd is cooling, and when eaten together, can cause digestive disturbances, as you experinced with nausea. However, it's essential to understand that not everyone might react the same. Your unique body constitution (prakriti) plays a significant role. If your digestive fire is strong, you might not notice any immediate effects, though over time, it could contribute to certain imbalances. For those who love their fish dishes, enjoying them without any curd or yogurt-based sauces is often recommended. Alternatively, some suggest using buttermilk or a small amount of fresh lime juice while preparing fish, which helps to enhance the digestive process without the same risk of incompatibility. To bring balance to your experience post a fish and curd meal, you might consider sipping on some ginger tea or warm water with a pinch of black pepper post-meal to aid digestion. Also, ensure that you consume such combinations occasionally rather than making them a regular part of your diet. In the end, listen to your body and observe if any patterns emerge following consumption of certain foods. If symptoms persist despite these precautions, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare practitioner familiar with Ayurveda to personalize their dietary advice based on your constitution and lifestyle. Stay mindful and enjoy your meals while keeping these principles in the back of your mind.
