is eating curd at night good - #24523

Harper

I am really confused about whether eating curd at night is good or not. My friend insists that it’s fine, saying her family does it all the time, but I feel uncertain. Last week, after I had some curd with my dinner, I woke up at night feeling super bloated and uncomfortable, like my tummy just couldn’t handle it. Ugh! I don’t know if that was because of the curd or something else I ate. I read somewhere that curd can be cool and heavy for digestion, especially at night. But then I found articles stating curd has probiotics and is healthy at any time, which just puzzles me. My family says it’s best to eat it in the morning, but that doesn’t really work with my lazy breakfast habits! What's frustrating is sometimes it feels like advice changes from person to person. Is eating curd at night good for digestion or no?? Am I just overthinking this or should I really steer clear even if the taste is amazing? Help please!

Doctors’ responses

Eating curd at night, especially in Ayurveda, is generally discouraged due to its inherent qualities. Curd is known to be heavy, cooling, and mucous-forming, all of which may not align well with the body’s natural rhythms in the evening. During the night, our digestive fire (agni) diminishes, making it harder for the body to digest heavy foods and can lead to discomfort such as bloating and indigestion - just like what you experienced. Furthermore, curd can potentially increase Kapha dosha, which is characterized by qualities like heaviness and coldness. At night, Kapha is naturally dominant in the body, and consuming curd can exacerbate this, thereby promoting respiratory issues or congestion over time if consumed regularly at night time. In comparison, during the day, preferably before lunch, the digestive fire is stronger, and can break down the qualities of curd more efficiently. If ja you find it challenging to incorporate curd in the morning due to your schedule, consider having it as part of your lunch instead. Adding spices like cumin powder or black pepper can help balance its cooling nature, making it easier to digest. Still, every individual's prakriti (constitution) varies, and digestion capacity can be influenced by several personal and lifestyle factors. If you love the taste of curd, try a small quantity during the day and observe how your body responds. Also, homemade fresh curd is preferable over store-bought ones when considering for health benefits due the inclusion of active probiotic cultures. Ultimately, it is great to listen to the body’s feedback—if it doesn't sit well, perhaps reconsider its timing or portion size. Ayurveda emphasizes personalized dietary habits, and understanding the body’s signals is key to determining what feels balanced and harmonious for your digestion and overall well-being.
