can i eat curd and fish together - #25190

Hannah

I am dealing with this really confusing thing lately about food combinations. Like, can I eat curd and fish together? I thought it might be fine since I love both, but then someone mentioned that it could be bad for digestion and I don’t wanna mess up my tummy. I've had this issue before, where I mixed different things, and ended up feeling bloated and sick. Last weekend, I tried a local dish with fish curry and some yogurt on the side, and while it tasted amazing, I felt super uneasy afterward. Now I’m questioning everything! Is there some truth to the whole curd and fish thing? Can I eat curd and fish together without it being a disaster? I mean, honestly, I've done it multiple times and sometimes felt fine, but this last one was really off. I even looked it up, but there’s so much conflicting info online. Like, do I just need to avoid them together for good, or is it just an old myth? Help!

Eating curd and fish together leans into the realm of dosha aggravation, mainly from the Ayurvedic perspective. In Ayurveda, the combination is traditionally considered incompatible or "viruddha ahara." Such combinations are said to disturb the digestive fire (agni), leading to digestive unease or imbalance, even minor toxic formations called "ama." The issue mainly arises because curd is sour and heavy, and predominately enhances the Kapha dosha, while fish—especially certain kinds—can increase Pitta and are heating in nature. Their opposing qualities can cause digestion distress, as the body gets confused with different digestive enzymes being required. When you experienced discomfort after eating fish curry with yogurt, it might indeed have been due to this potential imbalance causing indigestion, bloating, uneasiness or even ama buildup. However, I recommend personal observation. If you don't feel discomfort when consuming them together, perhaps your digestive fire is capable of managing such combinations. But it's essential to do so cautiously. If you've noted consistent disharmony after eating such pairings, it might be wise to avoid them. If you're still keen on having both, consider a few points: lessen the quantity and frequency, ensure that the curd is fresh to avoid excessive sourness (reducing kapha), and include little spices like cumin or ginger to help digestion. Certainly, there's a difference of opinions even within the Ayurvedic community, and people are unique in their digestion capacity or agni. Therefore, it's essential to heed to your body's signals; when possible, maintaining simpler food combinations that don't overburden your digestive power might be the better approach. For occasional indulgences, ensure you're well-hydrated, and perhaps engage in some light physical activity post-meal to help digestion, but ultimately, whenever in doubt or if any serious discomfort arises, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized guidance can be beneficial.
