HELLO PRASAD,

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) means the tissues around your shoulder joint get inflamed and thickened , making movement painful and stiff.

-In Diabetes, high sugar levels damage small blood vessels and slow healing -This makes the shoulder capsule more likely to become tight, leading to pain and difficulty lifting the arm. -Often it starts in one shoulder and then the other may get involved if sugar remains uncontrolled.

SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOTICE -Dull or aching pain, worse at night -Stiffness- can’t lift hand overhead, can’t comb hair, can’t reach behind back -Three stages :- Freezing (pain more, movement less)-> frozen (stiffness dominates)-> Thawing (slow recovery)

AYURVEDIC VIEW -Called Avabahuka in Ayurveda- a vata disorder in the shoulder region -Diabetes creates kapha and vata imbalance-> leading to weakness of tissues and joint problems

TREATMENT GOALS -reduce pain and inflamamtion -improve shoulder mobility -correct vata-kapha imbalance -support diabetes control to prevent recurrence -strengthen muscles and tendons around the shoulder

INTERNAL MEDICATIONS

1) YOGARAJ GUGGULU= 2 tabs twice daily after food (6-8 weeks) =reduces pain , stiffness, balances vata

2) MAHARASNADI KASHAYA= 30 ml with warm water twice daily after meals for 2 months =improves joint mobility, reduces inflamation

3) DASHMOOLA KASHAYA= 15ml with warm water twice daily before meals for 2 months =relieves stiffness, clears vata from joints

4) NISHAMALAKI CHURNA= 5 gm with warm water twice daily =controls blood sugar, antioxidants

EXTERNAL THERAPIES

1) OIL MASSAGE= with mahanarayan taila = warms joint, reduces pain

2) Steam fomentation= loosens stiffness

3) HERBAL PASTE= with dashmoola powder mixed in warm castor oil for local releif

LIFESTYLE CHANGES -keep sugar strictly under control- both modern and ayurvedic support -avoid cold exposure, cold foods, or sudden jerky shoulder movements -warm baths and gentle stretching help reduce stiffness -keep a regular sleep pattern - irregular sleep aggravates vata

DIET -Favour warm , light, freshly cooked meals -use spices like ginger, turmeric, fenugreek, cinnamon, black pepper -include bitter and astringent tastes bitter gourd, methi leaves for diabetes -avoid refined sugar, sweets, bakery, fried junk, excess dairy -take more green leafy vegetables, whole grains , pulses, barley, millets -drink warm water avoid cold water , ice

YOGA ASANAS (gentle, not forceful) -tadasana (stretching arms overhead gently) -gomukhasana = for shoulder mobility -paschim namaskar -garudasana arms. for shoulder stretch -shoulder rotations, pendulum exercises daily

PRANAYAM -Anulom vilom= balances vata -Bhramari= calms mind, reduces stress

HOME REMEDIES -warm compress on the shoulder daily -gentle massage with warm sesame oil or castor oil -turmeric milk with a pinch of black pepper if digestion allows -fenugrrek seeds soaked overnight, chew in morning- supports diabetes -regular shoulder mobility exercises (don’t keep the shoulder completely still)

-Frozen shoulder usually takes 1-2 years to resolve naturally, but with good Ayurvedic management + sugar control + physiotherapy , recovery is much faster -Don’t stop moving the shoulder completely, gentle, regular mobility is key. -Diabetes must be addressed hand-in-hand- if sugar stays high, the shoulder will stay stiff.

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

DR. MAITRI ACHARYA

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, often accompanies diabetes, creating a challenging condition to manage. The Ayurvedic approach, grounded in balancing doshas and strengthening dhatus, offers holistic ways to tackle both frozen shoulder and diabetes.

Firstly, addressing the diabetes is crucial. Focus on pacifying Kapha and regulating Pitta doshas. Gurmar (Gymnema Sylvestre) is an herb known as ‘sugar destroyer’—it could be supportive, best taken as 500 mg tablet twice a day with warm water, half an hour before meals. Use of bitter herbs like karela (bitter gourd) juice, one glass in empty stomach in the morning, can also help in stabilizing blood sugar levels.

For frozen shoulder, warm sesame oil massage infused with dashmoola or bala oil can alleviate stiffness and improve blood circulation. Gently massage the shoulder twice daily, followed by a steaming hot towel for about 10 minutes to enhance oil penetration and relieve pain. Herbal formulations like Yogaraj Guggulu, taken twice daily with warm water after meals, supports joint flexibility and addresses underlying doshic imbalance.

Yoga can aid significantly in mobility. Incorporate asanas like Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose) and Shashankasana (Rabbit pose) into your routine— gentle but regular stretching is the key here. Ensure breathing is coordinated with your movements, to maintain prana flow.

Keep Vata in balance, essential for joint health, through regular meals and ensuring enough hydration. Limit processed foods and focus on complex carbohydrates like whole grains by avoiding sugar and refined flours, working to stabilize agni (digestive fire).

Lastly, avoid smoking and reduce caffeine intake as they can exacerbate Vata. Regular monitoring of your blood sugar and collaborating with healthcare provider is critical, especially as changes are made. It’s a blend of Ayurvedic principles and modern control that’ll effectively manage your condition, leading to gradual improvement.
