can i apply flaxseed gel on oiled hair - #36205

Benjamin

I am facing a bit of a dilemma with my hair care routine. Recently, I heard that flaxseed gel works wonders for hair, but I usually oil my hair before styling. My friend swears by their flaxseed gel and said it helped with frizz and curl definition, which is exactly what I want, but now I'm like, can I apply flaxseed gel on oiled hair? I mean, is that gonna mix well or just mess everything up? Last week I tried a new oil, an olive one, and thought it’d be great for moisturization. My hair felt nice and smooth but then I couldn’t figure out if I should wash it out first before slapping on that flaxseed gel. Some people on insta say that applying gel on oiled hair isn’t a good idea, while others say it can be done, especially if the gel is made right. I really haven’t had consistent results with my hair lately, and it’s kind of frustrating. Feels like every time I try something new, I end up with a greasy look instead of the shiny, defined curls I want. What should I do? Can I apply flaxseed gel on oiled hair, or do I need to wash the oil out first? Looking for some honest advice here.

Combining the use of oil and flaxseed gel in your hair care routine is an intriguing approach, yet it has a few considerations. Typically, the way these two substances interact largely depends on the type and quantity of oil used and your specific hair type.

Flaxseed gel is renowned for providing definition and managing frizz, which is something you are aiming for with your curls. However, when applied over oil, the effectiveness can vary. Oil acts as a sealant, often locking in moisture when used after water-based products or treatments. When oil is applied before a water-based product, like flaxseed gel, it might create a barrier that could reduce gel’s ability to provide its full benefits.

Considering you applied olive oil, which is quite heavy as oils go, it might be a bit too much to put flaxseed gel straight over the top of it without washing. This could potentially lead to an overly greasy appearance instead of that defined, shiny look. Olive oil, while excellent for nourishing hair, can also weigh it down if used in excess before styling products like gel.

For optimal results, it could be beneficial to first follow an Ayurvedic hair care practice; use the oil as a pre-treatment. Apply it a few hours before or the night prior, allowing it to deeply nourish your hair. Wash your hair with a gentle, natural shampoo, preferably one infused with herbs like bhringraj or amla. These ingredients support healthy hair growth while removing excess oil yet retaining the necessary moisture.

After cleansing, apply the flaxseed gel to damp hair. This will give the gel maximum effectiveness for curl definition and anti-frizz properties, without the barrier of oil interfering. Begin with a small amount and apply evenly, focusing on the ends and wherever you notice frizz or a lack of definition.

If your hair tends to be very dry, you might consider a light oil as a finishing product but very sparingly - to avoid the greasy look. A few drops of light oil like argan- or jojoba oil can help lock in moisture and add shine.

Remember, consistency is key in any hair care routine. As you experiment with these methods, keep track of how your hair responds and adjust your approach as needed. Regularity with your chosen method will likely yield the best results, bringing you closer to those shiny, defined curls you desire.

Applying flaxseed gel on oiled hair can be a bit tricky. Since flaxseed gel is already quite moisturizing on its own, it can indeed be used after oil, but it largely depends on your hair type, the amount of oil applied, and your hair’s porosity.

In the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, if your hair tends towards being vata (dry and brittle), you might benefit from keeping some oil intact along with the gel, as it would help retain moisture. However, if you used a heavier oil like olive oil, it might be a good idea to go light with it, to avoid the greasy look you mentioned. Also, olive oil is quite thick and can weigh your hair down if too much is applied.

Ideally, experiment by using a very small amount of oil, focusing it more on the ends where your hair is likely driest. Then apply the flaxseed gel to see how your hair reacts. It is best to apply the gel to slightly damp hair for better absorption of the nutrients in the gel, so you might want to mist your hair lightly before applying. This way, you can maintain curl definition without excess oil weighing your hair down.

Flaxseed gel can also benefit from the warmth of the oil still remaining in the hair, helping with curl definition and reducing frizz. But you need to strike a balance based on your hair’s needs – a little trial and error might be necessary. Ensure your hair still feels light and fluffy after the gel application. If your hair seems too greasy, try using less oil next time or consider washing and thoroughly conditioning your hair before applying just the flaxseed gel on clean hair.

In essence, it’s all about finding your personal balance and listening to how your hair responds to these changes. Each individual’s reaction can vary based on their unique prakriti (body constitution) and current hair state.
