Seeking Help for Chronic Digestive Issues - #37018
Hope you’re well. I’m reaching out for support with a chronic digestive issue. I follow a pescetarian diet, I don’t eat processed foods, and I drink at least 2.5–3 litres of water daily; however, I still struggle with chronic constipation. I recently had a colonoscopy, and they found some erosion in the small intestine. The specialist said there is nothing urgent or alarming, but biopsies were taken as part of standard procedure and I am still waiting for the results. Despite what seems like a clean diet and hydration, my bowel movements are irregular and difficult. I would like to understand if there might be an imbalance from an Ayurvedic perspective — such as Vata aggravation, low agni, or any other factor that could be contributing — and receive guidance on diet, herbal remedies lifestyle practices to restore healthy elimination and support the healing of my intestines. I would be very grateful for your assessment and recommendations.

Chronic digestive issues like yours, despite a seemingly healthy diet, could be rooted in an Ayurvedic imbalance, particularly Vata aggravation. Vata dosha governs movement, and its imbalance often leads to irregular bowel habits, dryness, and constipation. To address this, enhancing agni or digestive fire will be vital.
Start by incorporating warm, cooked foods which are easier to digest and pacify Vata. Avoid raw salads or cold meals. Cooking with spices like cumin, coriander, and fennel can stimulate digestion. Ghee is particularly nourishing; consuming 1 teaspoon of warm ghee in the morning on empty stomach (either with warm water or milk) can aid in lubrication and smooth bowel movement.
Since you follow a pescetarian diet, ensure your meals are rich in healthy fats and fibers. Include cooked vegetables like carrots, zucchini, and squash which are Vata balancing. Opt for small, frequent meals instead of large ones, giving your digestive system time to process each.
Herbal aids like Triphala churna is beneficial in regulating bowel movements. Taking 1–2 teaspoons mixed in warm water at night before bed can help in gentle cleansing of intestines and support overall digestion.
Sipping warm water throughout the day instead of cold is advisable to enhance digestive processes. You could also engage in regular light exercises like yoga, focusing on poses like Pawanmuktasana or Vajrasana post meals, which help in reducing bloating and aiding digestion.
Maintaining a consistent routine is essential to stabilize Vata. Try waking up and eating meals at the same times daily. Stress management is another aspect; practices such as meditation or pranayama can help calm the mind and support digestion. Ashwagandha can be beneficial for this; you can take it as a supplement under guidance from a practitioner.
These steps should be safer interim solutions until your biopsy results are back. If you experience severe symptoms or pain, seek immediate medical attention. Combining Ayurveda wisdom with your specialist’s advice will be the best approach for your recovery.
