how to identify dry skin - #37510

Samuel

I am really struggling with my skin lately and not sure how to identify dry skin. I've notices some patches that feel rough and kinda itchy, especially on my arms and elbows. My friends say it’s just winter, but it seems like more than that?? I used to have pretty normal skin, but now it feels tight after I wash my face, and when I put on moisturizer it doesn’t even help much. Last week I checked with a dermatologist and they said maybe it’s eczema but when I look that up, I can’t tell if what I have is actually eczema or just plain old dry skin! I think there's a difference?? Like, dry skin can be flaky, but mine isn’t super flaky just feels super dry and uncomfortable. I also feel like I’m not entirely sure how to identify dry skin vs. other conditions that might look similar. Is there a way to tell if it’s more severe or if it’ll go away on its own? I keep slathering on creams, but I’m also worried they might be making it worse. What should I look for? Any tips on how to identify dry skin specifically? Or do you think it could be something else? Please help!

Doctors' responses

Understanding the nuances between dry skin, eczema, and other conditions can often be confusing. In Ayurveda, dry skin is typically associated with an imbalance in the Vata dosha, characterized by qualities like dryness, roughness, and a general feeling of tightness in the skin. The scenario you’re describing — rough, itchy patches that feels tight — fits quite well with what we may identify as Vata-related dryness.

Dry skin tends to feel tight, especially after cleansing. This tight sensation, along with persistent rough patches and itchiness, can definitely point towards Vata-related dryness, which doesn’t always involve flaking. The difference between regular dry skin and eczema often involves the severity and appearance. Eczema might include red, inflamed areas, sometimes with weeping or crusting, whereas dry skin is more about texture and feel.

Considering your skin feels particularly tight and dry after washing, ensure you’re using a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Harsh cleansers can aggravate the dryness, making symptoms worse. Use lukewarm water instead of hot as it can strip natural oils from your skin.

To balance Vata, it’s beneficial to look at both external and internal applications. Internally, include more healthy fats in your diet, like ghee or sesame oil, both of which nourish the skin from within. Hydration is crucial, drink warm water throughout the day to support your skin’s moisture levels.

Externally, look for moisturizers that include sesame oil or almond oil, as they’re heavier and penetrate deeply. Daily abhyanga (oil massage) with warm sesame oil before showering can do wonders for maintaining hydration.

Avoid products with alcohol or strong fragrances as these may exacerbate symptoms. If there’s any itching, a paste of sandalwood and rose water applied on affected areas may help soothe.

Keep monitoring your skin’s response. If what you’re dealing with is simply dry skin, adopting these methods consistently should bring about a tangible improvement within a few weeks. However, if you begin noticing redness, spreading, or significant discomfort, consulting with a healthcare provider to explore other potential causes would be advisable.
