Constipation, especially if it’s been a lifelong issue, points towards a chronic imbalance in your body according to Ayurveda. Usually, constipation is related to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which governs movement and elimination. However, solving this permanently requires a comprehensive approach to identify and rectify underlying issues.
First and foremost, you’ll need to pay closer attention to your diet. Consider including more fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Regular intake of ghee, specifically before sleep, can lubricate your intestines. Drink warm water throughout the day to support flushing out toxins and ease digestion - lukewarm water upon waking stimulates your agni, or digestive fire. Limit intake of processed foods and cold beverages which aggravate Vata. You may find it beneficial to consume meals at consistent times daily, as erratic eating habits can impede digestion.
Strengthening your agni is central to resolving constipation. Consuming ginger tea helps, as ginger stokes digestive fire. A pinch of hing (asafoetida) in your meals can prevent abdominal discomfort and aid in smoother bowel movements. For some, Triphala churna, taken with warm water before bedtime, serves as a gentle laxative that tones the bowel.
Physical activity also plays a crucial role. Regular, moderate exercise can help stimulate peristalsis in the intestines. Practicing yoga postures like Pavanamuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose) and Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) can be particularly effective in promoting elimination.
Stress management is often overlooked but critical. Practices such as meditation or Pranayama (breathing exercises) may help calm Vata, as mental unrest and corresponding physical tension can constrict bowel function.
Constipation can also stem from dehydration. Ensure adequate fluid intake, aiming to sip water through the day rather than gulping large amounts at once. Herbal teas, especially those with fennel or mint, offer a soothing choice to improve digestion.
Consider that an ayurvedic practitioner can assess your prakriti (natural balance) more accurately and tailor recommendations to your specific health profile. If constipation leads to severe discomfort or significant health impacts, seek medical attention to rule out conditions requiring immediate intervention.
Constipation even though if it’s since childhood can be reversed if you follow strict diet and lifestyle modification along with herbal support Take Haritaki churna 1 tsp at bedtime with water Abhaya aristha 15-0-15 ml with equal water Drink plenty of fluid Include fruits vegetables in diet Avoid spicy sour non veg foods Do walking daily Avoid sleeping immediately after taking food
