how to apply indigo powder - #41441

Gabriel

I am really confused about how to apply indigo powder. I tried using it recently after seeing some great results online, but I think I messed it up. Last week, I mixed the indigo powder with water and some conditioner, but when I applied it, the color came out super uneven, like some areas were dark and others barely had a tint. I even left it on for like an hour, but it just didn't take right. Now I’m worried that maybe I should’ve prepped my hair differently, or do I need to mix it with something else first? The internet shows so many methods on how to apply indigo powder but none of them seemed to work for me. I wondered if I maybe didn’t rinse it out properly cause, honestly, I felt a bit rushed and overwhelmed. Should I have used the indigo powder on dry hair or wet? Plus, any tips on how to apply indigo powder evenly would be super helpful, like should I section my hair or something? It's frustrating because I was really hoping for that deep blue-black color, and now I’m kinda scared to try again. Would love any advice anyone could share!

Applying indigo powder for hair color can indeed be tricky, but let’s break it down. First, indigo works best when applied to hair that’s been naturally colored with henna first, as indigo binds more effectively to the henna-treated hair, creating that rich blue-black shade you’re aiming for. Rinsing it off too soon or not properly can also lead to uneven results.

Start by making sure your hair is freshly washed and completely dry. Indigo should not be mixed with conditioners or oils, as these can block its coloring properties. Prepare your indigo paste by mixing indigo powder with warm water to get a yogurt-like consistency and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. In this short time, it releases the dye. You want to use it immediately after it turns dark, which signals it’s ready.

Then, yes, you should apply the paste liberally to sectioned hair for even application. Start from the roots and work your way to the tips, making sure each strand is covered properly. It’s helpful to divide the hair into small sections – maybe 6-8 sections, or more if your hair is particularly thick. Use gloves to avoid staining your hands, and ensure the paste covers every inch.

Wrap your indigo-coated hair in a plastic wrap or shower cap – this keeps the moisture in. Keep it on for about 2 to 4 hours to allow the indigo to work its magic fully. When rinsing, use just water and avoid shampooing immediately as it can strip away the dye. Allow at least 24-48 hours before the next wash to let the color settle.

Try to avoid any chemical treatments in between as these can affect color stability. Patience is key here, if the color isn’t dark enough, a second application without waiting for too long between could be beneficial. Stick to these preparations to get that consistent, rich color.
