how to reduce pitta naturally - #44487

Jackson

I am feeling really overwhelmed lately with my digestion, and I think it’s because I have a lot of pitta. I’ve always had this super fiery personality, which I guess is part of it, but after eating some spicy food and dealing with stress from work, everything just spiraled. My stomach is constantly upset, and I feel way too heated, like I could explode. I even got some tests done, and the doctor said my pitta seems elevated. A friend suggested I look into how to reduce pitta naturally, but I'm totally lost on where to start. I read somewhere that mint tea and cooling foods might help, but like, do I just stop eating all my favorite spicy dishes?? I LOVE them! Also, what about yoga?? Are there particular poses or practices that can bring down this fiery energy? I’m kinda worried that if I don’t figure out how to reduce pitta naturally, I’ll just end up with worse digestion issues or more stress. Do any of you have experiences or tips? Anything would be helpful!! Plus, is there a specific diet plan or something that could work? Just feeling a bit scatterbrained right now — thanks in advance for any advice!

Doctors' responses

To manage elevated pitta, your primary focus should be on cooling both your body and mind. Recognize that stress, spicy foods, and even heated environments can further aggravate your pitta. Let’s approach this step by step.

First, your diet. Yes, unfortunately, you’ll need to curb down your intake of spicy foods, even if they’re your favorite. Emphasize including more cooling, hydrating foods like cucumbers, melons, coconut water, and leafy greens. These not only help in cooling down but also nourish your digestive system. Mint tea is indeed beneficial; two to three cups a day can work to soothe and reduce pitta symptoms. Additionally, you may try barley, wheat, or oats over spicy or oily foods for a more balancing effect.

In terms of lifestyle, yes, yoga can be immensely helpful. Opt for calming poses such as Child’s Pose (Balasana), Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana), or Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana). These aren’t just beneficial for cooling your energy but they’re also great for digestion improvement. Practicing Pranayama, specifically cooling breaths like Sheetali, can help pacify the fiery energy of pitta.

Additionally, try to engage in stress-reducing practices like meditation. Even five minutes daily can create a difference. Consider spending time in nature, near water bodies if possible, for their naturally cooling influence.

Limit exposure to excessive heat, be it sauna or sunbathing. Taking some time every day to relax away from digital screens can also calm the mind and body. For diet plan, aim for regular, consistent meal timings, avoiding skipping meals to maintain digestive health. Avoiding hot, sour, and salty foods consistently will lessen pitta imbalances over time.

Remember, observing how your body responds to these changes is vital. This process is about learning and adjusting as per your unique constitution and lifestyle. Always feel free to consult directly with an Ayurvedic practitioner for tailored advice specific to your prakriti.
