As ulcerative colitis is chronic and sensitive…Six years is a long time, Medicines like Masacol and Salazodine help control the disease, but food and daily habits decide how often it flares and how well the gut heals.

Right now, if symptoms are severe, the intestine is very sensitive. Even healthy foods can irritate it. Eat food which is soft, warm and simple like rice, rice porridge, soft khichdi, boiled potatoes, bottle gourd, pumpkin, ridge gourd and carrot can be taken Eat small quantities at regular intervals Warm water is better than cold. Avoid - Raw vegetables, salads, sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, onion, garlic, tomato, spicy food, fried food, bakery items, packaged snacks, tea, coffee and alcohol Since you already noticed spicy food as a trigger. During flares, avoid high fibre which may create trouble, raw fruits, millets and heavy whole grains should be limited.

Ripe banana, stewed apple and diluted pomegranate juice can be taken Curd can be taken during daytime, but if it increases gas or loose motions, stop it.

Do not overeat and do not keep long gaps between meals. Late nights, stress, anger and irregular sleep directly will disturb the gut and bring flares

Ulcerative colitis does not heal in days. When diet is kept simple for months, inflammation slowly settles and medicines start working better. After stools become more stable, foods can be added back slowly, one by one, and only if they suit you.

Hlo, Tq for your question

Firstly want to tell- “Ulcerative colitis ka permanent cure sirf diet se possible nahi hota. Lekin sahi diet se flares control ho sakte hain, remission lambi ho sakti hai aur medicines kam lag sakti hain.”

BEST DIET PRINCIPLES FOR ULCERATIVE COLITIS–

Firstly keep in mind, that

✨✨“Har vegetable healthy hoti hai, lekin UC mein raw aur high-fiber vegetables flare badhate hain.”✨✨

🔴 DURING FLARE-UPS (most important)

Colon is inflamed → needs rest, not rough food.

❌AVOID COMPLETELY: - Spicy food 🌶️ - Fried & oily food - Raw vegetables - Salad - Nuts & seeds - Whole grains - Milk (if it causes diarrhea) - Tea, coffee, alcohol

EAT:

- Soft, low-fiber, easily digestible food: - Plain rice - Khichdi - Curd (if tolerated) - Banana - Steamed vegetables - Boiled potato - Moong dal (thin) - Coconut water

Line to say: “Flare ke time gut ko aaram chahiye, strength nahi.”

🟢 DURING REMISSION (when symptoms settle)

Goal: maintain healing, prevent relapse

PREFER: - Well-cooked vegetables - Rice, soft roti - Dal (well cooked) - Curd / buttermilk - Fruits without peel (papaya, apple stew) - Homemade food only

AVOID LONG-TERM:❌ - Spicy food (already a trigger in your case) - Junk & packaged food - Bakery items - Alcohol & smoking - Excess sugar

IMPORTANT NON-DIET FACTORS- 1️⃣ Stress control Stress directly worsens UC flares → meditation, pranayama, adequate sleep

2️⃣ Regular medicines are essential

“Diet medicines ka replacement nahi hai. Dono saath chalne chahiye.”

Hello, You have been suffering from Ulcerative Colitis for 6 years with severe and frequent flare-ups, and you have already used Mesacol, Salazodine EC, and other medicines. Your symptoms are clearly aggravated by spicy foods, and despite eating mostly whole foods and vegetables, inflammation is persisting.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, relapsing autoimmune condition. 👉 No system can promise a permanent “cure”, but ✅ Long-term remission, symptom control, mucosal healing, and flare prevention ARE achievable with correct diet, lifestyle, and supportive therapy.

🔎 Recommended Investigations (If not done in the last 6 months) 1. CBC & ESR / CRP – inflammation status 2. Stool calprotectin – disease activity 3. Liver Function Test – due to long-term medications 4. Vitamin D, B12, Iron profile – common deficiencies in UC

🥗 Most Important: Diet for Ulcerative Colitis (Core Treatment) During Active Flares (Strict Diet) ✅ Preferred foods 1. Soft rice / rice gruel (kanji) 2. Well-cooked moong dal 3. Boiled bottle gourd, ash gourd, pumpkin 4. Pomegranate juice (diluted) 5. Buttermilk (thin, spiced with roasted cumin) ❌ Strictly avoid 1. Spicy food (major trigger for you) 2. Raw vegetables & salads 3. Fried, oily, fermented foods 4. Chilies, pepper, garam masala 5. Tea, coffee, alcohol

During Remission (To prevent flares) ✅ Include 1. Soft, warm, freshly cooked food 2. Rice, oats, khichdi 3. Steamed vegetables (never raw) 4. Ghee – 1 tsp daily (heals gut lining) 5. Banana, apple (stewed if sensitive) ❌ Avoid long-term 1. Excess fiber, millet overload 2. Bakery, packaged foods 3. Too many whole raw vegetables 4. Late-night eating

👉 Important note: “Mostly vegetables” sounds healthy, but in UC raw and excess vegetables irritate ulcers and worsen flares.

💊 Internal Medicines: Phase 1 – 4 weeks (Flare control + Gut healing) 1. Kutaj Ghan Vati – 1 tablet twice daily after meals 2. Bilva Avaleha – 1 tsp twice daily after meals 3. Yashtimadhu (Licorice) Churna – ½ tsp with warm milk at bedtime

Phase 2 – 8–12 weeks (Remission maintenance) 1. Guduchi Satva – 500 mg once daily in the morning

🌿 Lifestyle & Supportive Care 1. Fixed meal timings (very important) 2. Avoid fasting or skipping meals 3. Adequate sleep 4. Stress reduction – stress directly triggers flares

🧘🏻‍♂️ Yoga & Mind Care (Only gentle practices) 1. Anulom Vilom – 10 minutes 2. Bhramari – 5 minutes 3. Meditation / quiet sitting – 5–10 minutes ❌ Avoid intense yoga, Kapalbhati during flares

🕉️ Follow-up & Long-term Outlook * Symptom calming expected in 2–3 weeks * Reduction in flare frequency over 2–3 months * Continue maintenance diet even when symptoms improve * Do NOT stop allopathic medicines abruptly * With discipline, long remission is possible

✨ Ulcerative colitis may not be “cured forever,” but with the right diet and gut-healing approach, you can live symptom-free for long periods and drastically reduce flares.

With kind regards, Dr. Sumi MS (Ayu)

Hello, I‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ really empathize with you. When you have Ulcerative Colitis (UC) like me for 6 years, and you keep experiencing flare-ups, and even after taking medicines like Mesacol, Salazodine EC, you don’t get relief for a long time, it is quite draining both emotionally and physically.

Understanding Ulcerative Colitis (from an Ayurvedic perspective)

According to Ayurveda, Ulcerative Colitis is very similar to Raktatisara / Pittaja Grahani, which is characterized by:

Severe aggravation of pitta dosha The intestinal lining gets inflamed and ulcerated Digestive fire (Agni) becomes weak and unstable Some foods cause bleeding, pain, urgency, and diarrhea directly

UC is a chronic inflammatory condition.

👉 Diet alone cannot “cure” it permanently, but the right diet is the MOST potent tool to:

Reduce the number of flare-ups Restore the gut lining Extend the period of remission Decrease the dependency on drugs

GOLDEN RULE for UC Diet

➡️ Any type of food that is hot, spicy, sour, rough, raw, fermented, or is an irritating will aggravate UC.

➡️ Any type of food that is soft, cooling, soothing, and is easy to digest will be helpful in the healing process.

BEST DIET FOR ULCERATIVE COLITIS

Foods You SHOULD EAT (Core Healing Diet)

Grains (Only Well-cooked)

–White rice –Rice gruel (peya) –Soft wheat roti –Oats (well cooked)

Proteins

–Moong dal (yellow, well cooked & strained) –Moong dal soup –Paneer (fresh, small quantity) –Boiled egg white (if tolerated)

Vegetables (Cooked & Soft Only)

–Bottle gourd (lauki) –Ash gourd –Pumpkin –Ridge gourd –Carrot (well cooked)

❌ Do not eat raw salads even if it is in small amounts

Fruits (Only non-acidic & ripe)

–Ripe banana –Apple (stewed) –Papaya (small quantity)

Dairy –Cow’s milk (boiled & cooled) –Homemade thin buttermilk (daytime only)

Fats (Very important for gut healing) – Cow ghee – 1–2 tsp daily (Ghee is one of the best healers for intestinal ulcers)

❌FOODS YOU MUST STRICTLY AVOID

–Spicy food (you already identified this trigger) – Chili, garam masala, black pepper – Fried food, junk food – Tea, coffee, alcohol – Sour foods (lemon, vinegar, pickles) –Fermented foods –Onion, garlic (raw or cooked) –Tomatoes –Curd at night –Bakery items, biscuits –Raw vegetables, sprouts

HOW TO EAT (VERY IMPORTANT)

✔️ Eating small meals every 3–4 hours ✔️ Not overeating ✔️ Eating only when the previous meal is digested ✔️ Avoid late-night dinners ✔️ Food should be warm, fresh, and soft

DIET DURING FLARE-UPS (STRICT PHASE)

During extreme symptoms:

–Rice gruel –Moong dal water –Pomegranate juice (diluted) –Buttermilk with roasted cumin –Ghee with rice

👉 This phase is very essential for gut rest and not for food variety.

AYURVEDIC SUPPORT (Diet Alone Is Not Enough)

For long-running UC, diet + medicines give the best results.

1.Kutaj ghanvati 1-0-1 after food 2 Mebarid 1-0-1 after food 3.Dadimadi ghrita 1 tsp morning empty stomach

⚠️ Please do not discontinue your allopathic medicines abruptly.

CAN UC BE CURED PERMANENTLY? (HONEST ANSWER)

UC can be maintained in remission for a long period Very few flare-ups or none at all Quality of life can be almost normal

❌ It is not medically correct to claim “permanent cure” through diet alone.

Your condition can be managed and your gut can restore, but it takes:

Strictness in diet Regularity Personalized treatment Patience

You have done a great job by figuring out the triggers already.

I wish you lots of fortitude and steady recovery

Warm Regards Dr Snehal ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Vidhate

THANK YOU FOR CONTACTING ASK AYURVEDA

IN AYURVEDA, ULCERATIVE COLITIS IS CLOSELY RELATED TO RAKTA ATISARA AND PITTAJA GRAHANI. PERMANENT HEALING DOES NOT COME FROM STOPPING SYMPTOMS ALONE, IT COMES FROM COOLING THE INFLAMMATION, HEALING THE GUT LINING, STABILISING AGNI AND CALMING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. DIET PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE, BUT IT MUST BE VERY SPECIFIC, GENTLE AND HEALING, NOT JUST GENERALLY HEALTHY FOODS.

RIGHT NOW, EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE EATING WHOLE FOODS AND VEGETABLES, MANY RAW, FIBROUS OR GAS FORMING VEGETABLES CAN ACTUALLY AGGRAVATE YOUR CONDITION. DURING ACTIVE OR FREQUENT FLARES, YOUR COLON NEEDS REST, NOT LOAD. YOUR FOOD SHOULD BE SOFT, WARM, MOIST AND EASY TO DIGEST.

RICE SHOULD BE YOUR PRIMARY GRAIN, ESPECIALLY WHITE RICE, RED RICE OR OLD RICE COOKED VERY SOFT. RICE GRUEL, KHICHDI MADE WITH RICE AND MOONG DAL, AND WELL COOKED RICE PORRIDGE ARE VERY HEALING. AVOID WHEAT, MILLETS, OATS, BROWN RICE AND ANYTHING HEAVY OR DRY FOR NOW.

VEGETABLES SHOULD ONLY BE WELL COOKED AND LIMITED TO BOTTLE GOURD, RIDGE GOURD, ASH GOURD, PUMPKIN, CARROT AND LAUKI. THEY SHOULD BE BOILED OR STEAMED AND LIGHTLY MASHED. RAW SALADS, CABBAGE, CAULIFLOWER, ONION, TOMATO, CAPSICUM AND LEAFY GREENS WILL IRRITATE YOUR COLON AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED COMPLETELY AT THIS STAGE.

DAIRY CAN BE MEDICINAL OR HARMFUL DEPENDING ON FORM. FRESH HOMEMADE BUTTERMILK DILUTED WITH WATER AND A PINCH OF JEERA POWDER CAN BE TAKEN AT LUNCH IF IT DOES NOT INCREASE LOOSE STOOLS. MILK, CURD, CHEESE AND COLD DAIRY PRODUCTS SHOULD BE AVOIDED DURING FLARES.

PROTEIN SHOULD COME MAINLY FROM MOONG DAL, WELL COOKED AND SPICED VERY MILDLY. AVOID RAJMA, CHOLE, BLACK CHANA, SOY AND PROTEIN POWDERS AS THEY FERMENT AND INCREASE INFLAMMATION.

SPICES MUST BE USED VERY CAREFULLY. SPICY FOOD IS A CLEAR TRIGGER FOR YOU, SO AVOID CHILLI, PEPPER, GARAM MASALA, VINEGAR AND SOUR PICKLES COMPLETELY. ONLY USE JEERA, DHANIA AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF SAUNF FOR DIGESTION. GHEE IN SMALL QUANTITY IS VERY IMPORTANT AS IT HEALS THE COLON AND REDUCES PITTA, SO DO NOT FEAR IT.

FRUITS SHOULD BE MINIMAL AND ONLY RIPE BANANA, STEWED APPLE OR POMEGRANATE JUICE DILUTED WITH WATER. AVOID CITRUS, PAPAYA, GUAVA, GRAPES AND DRY FRUITS DURING ACTIVE DISEASE.

NEVER EAT COLD FOOD, REFRIGERATED FOOD OR LEFTOVERS. EAT AT REGULAR TIMES, CHEW SLOWLY AND STOP EATING BEFORE YOU FEEL FULL. NIGHT DINNER SHOULD BE VERY LIGHT AND EARLY.

PERMANENT HEALING IN ULCERATIVE COLITIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH DIET ALONE. DIET CREATES A SAFE ENVIRONMENT, BUT HERBAL MEDICINES, BASTI THERAPY, STRESS MANAGEMENT AND PROPER PITTA PACIFICATION ARE REQUIRED.LONG STANDING DISEASE OF 6 YEARS NEEDS PATIENCE AND A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH, BUT CAN ACHIEVE LONG TERM REMISSION AND DRUG FREE LIFE WITH PROPER AYURVEDIC CARE.

IF YOU FOLLOW THIS DIET STRICTLY FOR FEW WEEKS, YOUR FREQUENCY, BLEEDING AND URGENCY WILL START SETTLING. ONCE THE FLARES COME UNDER CONTROL, THE DIET CAN BE GRADUALLY EXPANDED IN A SAFE MANNER.
