Doctors' responses

Anas Wajahat, I understand how challenging it can be to support a child with ADHD. Since your son is undergoing therapy, combining it with natural methods, diet, and Ayurvedic remedies can help improve his brain development, concentration, and focus.

1. Diet for Brain Development • Healthy Fats – Include walnuts, soaked almonds, ghee, and coconut oil, as they nourish the brain. • Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Flaxseeds, chia seeds, and fish (if non-veg) help in brain function. • Iron & Zinc-Rich Foods – Pumpkin seeds, spinach, and dates support mental clarity. • Avoid Sugar & Processed Foods – They worsen hyperactivity and attention issues. • Hydration – Ensure he drinks enough water and avoids artificial drinks. • Ashwagandha –1/4tsp with warm milk at night Helps reduce anxiety and emotional instability. • Golden Milk (Turmeric + Milk) – Reduces inflammation and supports the nervous system.

3. Activities & Lifestyle Changes • Structured Routine – ADHD kids do well with predictable schedules. • Physical Activity – Encourage sports like swimming or cycling to channel energy positively. • Mindfulness & Breathing Exercises – Simple deep breathing and chanting “OM” can calm hyperactivity. • Puzzles & Memory Games – Help improve focus gradually.

4. Home Remedies for Focus • 1 soaked almond + 1/4tsp Brahmi powder with milk in the morning – Boosts brain function. • Mix 1 tsp honey with 1 pinch of cinnamon – Enhances memory and alertness. • Oil Massage (With Brahmi or Coconut Oil) – Helps relax nerves and improve concentration.

5. Emotional Support • Avoid comparisons – ADHD kids have unique talents and need positive reinforcement. • Praise efforts, not results – This builds confidence. • Give clear instructions – Short, simple directions help him stay focused.

Since he is already in therapy, adding these natural remedies and lifestyle changes can greatly support his progress. Let me know if you need a customized Ayurvedic treatment plan based on his specific behavior and needs. You’re doing great as a parent—just be patient and consistent!

Hi Anas,

I understand your concern deeply. Can you tell me about your son’s daily routine, including his diet, sleep patterns, and physical activity? Does he show any signs of hyperactivity or restlessness, or does he experience any digestive issues? In Ayurveda, we focus on balancing the mind and body, often using herbs and therapies to support brain health and concentration.

It’s understandable to feel concerned about your son. In Ayurveda, ADHD links to Vata imbalance. Vata governs the nervous system. Excess Vata leads to hyperactivity, poor focus, and emotional instability. Ayurvedic care calms the mind and supports brain development. Herbs like Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, and Ashwagandha help memory and concentration. Ghee, almonds, and walnuts nourish the brain. Avoid processed foods and sugars. Abhyanga with warm sesame oil soothes Vata. Yoga and breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom improve focus. Shirodhara therapy calms the nervous system. Continue his medical treatments. Ayurvedic support can help. With patience and care, positive changes are possible. But it is important to get an in depth assessment done by an Ayurvedic paediatrician to understand your options.

In Ayurveda, we aim to support brain development and improve concentration through a holistic approach that addresses imbalances and supports overall health. For your son, given his ADHD diagnosis, incorporating some specific Ayurvedic practices could be beneficial alongside the therapy he is already receiving.

First, consider incorporating Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) into his diet. Brahmi is renowned in Ayurveda for its brain-enhancing properties. You can give him Brahmi in the form of powder or syrup, following the instructions on the package or as advised by an Ayurvedic practitioner. Typically, a small amount like a half teaspoon, mixed with milk or warm water, is recommended in the morning. Brahmi helps in improving concentration and calming the mind.

Another herb to consider is Shankhpushpi, commonly used for memory and focus. This can also be given as a syrup or mixed with food. Make sure to check his digestion as well, as agni (digestive fire) is crucial for absorption of nutrients that support brain health. Encourage a diet rich in whole grains, veggies, fruits, and especially nuts like almonds and walnuts — these are really good for brain support.

Make sure he practices a regular routine, as predictability in daily activities can give mental stability. Encourage yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) suited for children. Simple yoga poses, like the balasana (child’s pose) and pranayama can enhance mental calmness and focus. Have him do these practices in the morning.

Limit screen time and stimulate his brain with puzzles and games that require strategy and memory, this can aid in improving focus. Ensure he gets enough sleep each night, as it is crucial for brain development.

It’s essential, however, to continue with regular medical advice and therapy, and ensure any additions to his regimen are discussed with your healthcare providers. Remember Ayurvedic approaches are complementary, not a replacement for traditional medicine, especially in more serious conditions.
