Can I use standardized extract of Ephedra Gerardiana for bronchitis instead of tea? - #55207
I'm looking for capsules, tablets or powder with standardized extract from Ephedra Gerardiana for easier breathing (diagnosed with bronchitis). My physician prescribed Ventolin (inhaler) for acute respiratory distress and Temazepam (because of sleep issues due to coughing). I have made Somlata tea from the herb and that prevents respitory attacks very well during the day, but I don't like the time it takes to make in the morning and the taste is not great. So I'd rather use tablets or capsules (or powder that I can put in capsules myself) with standardised extract. I made the tea from 'normal' powder (not standardised extract) and it is too much to put into capsules. Do you know a brand or a shop for standardised extract? Kind regards, Kees Bouwmaker from the Netherlands

Ephedra Gerardiana (Somlata) is used in Ayurveda mainly for Shwasa Roga (breathing disorders) because it helps open the airways, reduce mucus congestion, and improve breathing. Since your Somlata tea is already giving relief, a standardized extract may offer more convenience — but it should be used carefully. A few important points: Standardized Ephedra extracts can be stronger and more stimulating than herbal tea. They may increase heart rate, blood pressure, anxiety, tremors, or insomnia, especially when combined with inhalers like Ventolin. Since you already have sleep disturbance and are taking Temazepam, high-dose Ephedra extracts may worsen sleep in some people. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it is better to use: Low-dose standardized capsules Preferably taken morning and afternoon only Avoid late evening use You may look for products labeled: “Ephedra Gerardiana extract” “Somlata extract” Standardized for natural alkaloid content Better Ayurvedic support options for long-term bronchial balance include: Sitopaladi Churna Talisadi Churna Vasavaleha Yashtimadhu (Licorice) Kantakari formulations These are often gentler for chronic bronchitis and cough-related irritation. Also: Avoid cold foods, yogurt at night, smoking, and excess dairy Use warm water and steam inhalation regularly A pinch of turmeric with warm water at bedtime may help coughing Please avoid self-escalating the dose of Ephedra extract, because excessive use can strain the heart and nervous system. Wishing you smoother breathing and restful sleep, Mr. Bouwmaker.
Ephedra/Somlata may help breathing but can raise heart rate and bp with Ventolin. Use carefully. Brands Nutrija Ephedra Extract zyrex Somlata Tablet Ayurvedic support sitopaladi Churna 3 gm with honey twice daily Steam inhalation daily avoid cold food and smoking.
